Great Britain's "mystery plane," the super marine Napier S-4, crashed this morning during the navigability trials and la a to tal wreck. Captain Henry C. Blard, the pilot, is suffering from immer sion and shock but escaped serious Injury. Captain Blard had Just taken oft for the navigability and seaworth iness trial and was at an elevation ; of about two hundred feet when a wingo flutter apparently developed , in both wings of the monoplane. Captain Blaid attempted at once to laud. Aa he struck the water, the super-marine nosed down and som-1 ersaulted on her back, pressing the pilot under the surface. Captain Blard was wearing . a lifebelt and managed to clear him self and reached the surface as the Napier S-4 sunk. Captain Hubert Broad, who had taken the British Gloster Napier 111 out for her testa a Bhort lime before, seeing Captain Blard in trouble Btarted 4axying toward blm as he fell.' When Captain Blard freed himself from the wreckage Captain Broad threw him a second lifebelt to which he clung until rescue boats picked blm up a few minutes later. The crash occurred about a half mile off shore from the hangers. The super marine's mishap will throw into the Schneider cup race tomorrow both of Great Britain's Oloster-Napler Ill's, one of which ' had been held In reserve. Bert Hlnkler of Melbourne. Australia. the British reserve pilot .will take the second Gloster intp the race ! tomorrow. Captain Biard Intended ; to make no attempt to take part In the cup race after the shattering ; of his super marine. ! Tb super marine disintegrated as she sank in the water.
