He partlcfpatt-d In the various athletic endeavors of the Roseburg high school with credit to himself and to his school. He was a star plsyer In every sport, fighting for the school to the point of exhaustion, always willing to forget Individual honors in his ef forts to bring victory to his school, Just as be bad, entered college and was alaniiing on the threshold of a brilliant caeer he was accidentally killed by the discharge of a gun which he was cleaning. Horner Field Is proposed In recognition of the services of Dr. J. B. Horner, now dean In history at the Oregon Agricultural college. Mr. Horner claims the distinction of having established the public school system in Roseburg. He was one of the earliest principals in the Roseburg schools and was one of the pioneers In the educational field In this vicinity. The school board has hesitated to choose a name for the new field. There are so many persons deserving of honor, so many names which would prove suitable, that the school board has passed the responsibility on. It was thought best that the older students of the school, the alumni and those who hare gone through the school's ex periences, should be given the right to choose the name, and con sequently this policy has been adopted. Ail former aludents and gradu ates have the privilege of expres sing their choice of names. Any preference should be made known to City Superintendent M. 8.
