"Preaching Jesus Christ Is the
chief mission of a minister of the
gospel," was the message brought
by Rer. Melville T. Wire, of As
toria, In bis address of response at
the opining meeting. "We ought
all to serve our communities, but
when ministers become merely
handy men about town the chief
reason for their work Is lost," he
said.
Robort A. Booth, of Eugene,
gave the address of welcome. "We
have standard schools, standard
lumber scales, which makes It im
possible for products to pass mus
ter if they are not up to standard;
I we have standard food and stand
ards for everything we use or do,
he said. "Is it possible that In the
(universe, which was created in the
image of God, there Is no standard
of life? The mission of .Jesus
(Christ was to standardize human
, action.
The purpose of religion, he de
clared, la lo bring people to a right
i relation to each other. The change
in human relations, necessary to
bring about a harmony and joy,
cannot be accomplished by argu
ment or disputes over the interpre
tations of the acts of Jesus Christ,
he said.

practice, there Is not sufficient
time to file an application and
supporting data before the hearing
October 5th. Manifestly any effort
to bring the Modoc Northern case
beforej the Interstate Commerce
commission would meet with ob-'
Jectlon which would probably be
sustained by the Interstate Com
merce commhwlon on the grounds
that It would introduce new Issues.
While the commission Is not op
posed to construction of the Mo
doc Northern, It Is opposed to ac
cepting the Modoc Northern as a
substitute for a direct trans-state
line which It bt'lii ves to be of ut
most importance to the develop
ment of the entire state, but It Is
our firm belief that both the Mo
doc Northern and the trans-state
line will be constructed.
''The commission must take a
broader view and consider the
needs of the entire state. May we
direct attention to the fact that
the Modoc Northern, which you
state Is the most Important line in
Oregon, would be constructed In
California, while our application la
