As soon as Paul and I were old enough we were sent away, he to a military prep, school and 1 to a girls school rlage means. Parents seem to go on the supposition that love la the ea dall and beall ot marriage. "We will be together all the time." murmured Paul to me be tween his kisses; and 1 clung to him and gave him ay tremulou, burning lips, deliriously happy in the thought. "Dad, don't yo think Nature la very cruel? She paints in the un suspecting heart of youth a great desire, and all the older people about aid and abet her by looking on in amusement and saying: "Those two children are in love." No one ever tells these children what marriage, which la so radi cally different from lore, means. Indeed I have wondered lately It you older people know anything more about love than we do. If you do, certainly you should toll us something about It; you should not let us go Innocently to our doom. "And more than all the rest, yon should tell us that all Nature doe In pursuance ot some great plan Is to make two people thrill at each other's touch, and then, after she has made them think they cannot live without these thrills, society brings them together and they mate. Nature has already left them her work is done. "Some on has said that Love Is blind. I don't know, but 1 do know that when these two bewildered young people open their eyes to find a very prosaic young man and woman in the place of the god or goddess each had thought the oth er, when they understand that Na- ure has not only left, but has taken the thrill with her that she has taken the Illusion and left In Its place only grim reallty-a hopeless ness settles down ipon them, which la the most terrible disappointment they have ever known. Would he understand, and understanding. would he be honest with me? Or would he pat my shoulder and say: "My child, you are nervous from tho happenings ot the afternoon. When you come to, yourself you will understand that you have been talking more or less non sense." I felt If my father did this, dear diary, I should not want to live an other day, for I should know that there was no happiness, not even content, in the world. I would know that Nature and older people were In a conspiracy to bring the youth of the earth Into a net from which they could not escape, and wthln which they would be per fectly miserable.
