Colonel NuKent of the Inspector general's department in Washing ton Is a member of the coast artil lery corps. Colonel Scott Is not. They point out too that rivalry be tween the coast artillery nnd the air service Is keener than between any other two branches of the service. Colonel Mitchell often has pointed out the superiority of air defense over tho roast artillery to repel an Invasion from the air. Again I have been axked to ex press my opinion on the so-called disciplinary measures that are be ing taken In my case by the war department," Colonel Mitchell said. ( n Umpqui Chiefs Drilling A full attendance of the Vmpqua Chief drill team was reported last night at the armory and Chief Knudtson put the buys through the paces with a lot of pep. They will be all ready for the competi tion at the state fair next month and will surprise the visitors to the rair as well as local folks with their drills. On Thursday night the Chiefs and Hquaws will hold a Joint meeting at the armory to practice yells. A stranger tn Hoseburg today would have imagined that the city was ho-t to a convention of the organization of Hed Shirts, hut to the unlnltlted the presence of the brilliant colored shirts and hats which, were so prevalent on the streets today meant only that the deer season is about to open and that the unnual hunt for the elusive buck Is to be on tomor row. Hundreds of hunters from all parts of the state have been pouring into the county since the first of the week, and many have gone into the woods und estab lished camp In order to he in a place of advantage when the sea son opens. Deer are reported to be plenti ful this year, and many hunters will doubtless bag the limit the first day out. The New North I'mpqua rond Is proving a great attraction this year, opening up, as it doe, many miles of territory which has been little hunted In past years. Ie.r are plentiful in that section around the end of the road, It is said, and many are driving ns fur as they can with cars and are packing in to Steamboat Cre-k or beyond. Mrs. Henry Lan der was selected as the count y wlde leader In this project. A committee of women represent ing every community In the county will be named to work with Mrs. Lander in gathering statistics for upe,in the November conference. .Questionnaire will be prepared covering the different angles of the women's work and mailed out In nn effort to secure dependable information to be placed before the general committee, which will meet some time in October.
