Ltaitd U'lrt ) WATF.RBURY, Conn., Auk. 28. Louis "Kid" Kaplan of Merlden, Conn., remains featherweight box ing champion ot the world, having fought a draw In his 15 round con test with the former Callfornian, Babe Herman, before 20,000 per sons at Brassco park last niKht. Several experts were Inclined to favor Ho; man, who showed better generalship, but a whirlwind finish had much to do with the referee's decision. After the contest an ex amination revealed that Kaplan had suffered a broken finger in the eighth round. Kaplan said that af ter the eighth he had been able to use his right band only as a guard. In this sixth meeting between the two nu'n there was clinching and dancing and few clean punches were landed. Herman fought his usual stand up battle while Kap lan apparently had little of the driving power he showed In fight ing his way through to the cham pionship last winter in the tourna ment sponsored by the New York Slate Athletic Commission. In his contests of the tournament, he whipped the soldier, Bobby (inrcla, by a lightning attack in the final round and knocked out Danny Kra mer of Philadelphia for the chain- PROFESSIONAL CARDS OR. at. rl PLYLER CulropractV physician. 12 W. Herman was an al ternate In the championship tourn anient. Last night's combat was staged after a seething afternoon In which Kaplan bare.y managed to scale the 126 pounds which Is the limit for his weight. Police had to be called before the weighing bad been completed, Herman's manager claiming tbe title, because as he said, the champion was over the limit. Representatives of the Con netlcut boxing body, however, end ed the argument by declaring that Kaplan bad made the weight. Timekeeper Saved Kaplan. NEW HAVEN, Conn.. Aug. 28. Sports followers here were busy today discussing the Kaplan-Het-man fight of iast night and some ot the incidents which followed it, In cluding the resignation of Lavid F. j Fitzgerald of this city, as a licensed referee of boxing, and- the I claims that many of the rounds jwent less thau the inquired three minutes. j Twice during the bout, Herman's manager walked around the edge i of the ring to protest that the tune of the rounds was being clipped many seconds. Fitzgerald, who is one of the best known sports fol.owers and former i boxing and wrestling officials in ! the state, today said that he re turned his license as a referee to State Commissioner Thomas A. Donohuv, last night as a protest against the use In the Kaplan-Her-inian bout of Jack Sheehan of Bos I ton, when he understood up till 6 !p. m , that he (Fitzgerald) would be the referee. Fitzgerald says that if he had re fereed the bout be would have giv en the decision to' Herman, as In his opinion the latter took a ma jority of the rounds. James Cavalloro ot this city, a licensed timekeeper, said today that after Herman's manager had I made his first protest against ! "short rounds," State Commission er Donohue sent him to the other j side ot the ring to check up on I time, and that the watch showed that some rounds were eight and ten siconds shoit, and one, round was 33 seconds short.
