"Notwithstanding its daily use in enormous quantities, the supply of petroleum products in the United States is in no danger of a shortage. Far from it, ve are assured in a report issued after an exhaustive investigation by a commis sion which included, among others, four members of Presi dent Coolidge's cabinet. Five billion, three hundred million barrels of oil, the report announces, can be yielded by exist ing fields through present methods of pumping and flowing. And the estimate is made after present fields cease to pro duce there will remain in the ground, unrecoverable by pumping or flowing, twenty-six billion barrels of oil, a large portion of which may be recovered through new, but known, methods, such as flooding with water, the use of air or gas pressure to force the oil out, or mining. Altogether this comprises a considerable quantity of oil "in sight." But the major reserves of the nation lie in an area of more than a billion unexplored acres of land in the United States which are geologically favorable to the presence of oil. Here new fields are to be discovered. Then there are imports, partic ularly from South America, which will relieve the strain on the American reserves. And when, if ever, the supply of petroleum fails, the nation has huge deposits of oil shale, coal and lignites, from all of which liquid fuel and lubricants c.nn be obtained in such vast quantities as to present an as pect of unlimited supply, which will be drawn upon as price of products justifies development. - The report draws particular attention to two impend ing developments of very great importance. One is the ex tension within the industry of "cracking" crude oil, a pro cess which increases the yield of the all-important gasoline. The other is a change in motor construction which, roughly speaking, will double the mileage of the automobilo per gal lon Of gasoline. Herein is true conservation. Altogether, the findings of the committee are reassur ing. There may be passing periods of shortage of petroleum, but there is no danger in the situation. o . For all forms of life and property insurance the Ameri can people pay annually about $.1,500,000,000 a sum far greater than that paid by the next richest nation for such protection. Annual premium payments for property protec tion, not including automobile and theft insurance, is ap proximately $1,000,000,000, and for fife insurance about $2,r00,000,000. The figures represent estimates from au thoritative sources, compiled by Prudential Insurance comp any statistics, and include an item of $273,272' a year lor earthquake insurance. The earthquake premiums, it is stated, are drawn chiefly from the West, where recent dis astrous temblors arc said to have greatly simulated the bus iness of underwriters. It is estimated that 15,000,000 peo ple now pay weekly premiums, o Commercial fishermen holding licenses from the master fish warden of the state are entitled to fish within the limits of stations assigned to them, regardless of whether they own proity adjacent to their fishing grounds, but they must remain within their own limits. This, in effect, was the crux tu" an opinion handed down by a Portland court Tuesday. The decision is of importance to those engaged in salmon fishing because it lays down the rule that no fisherman is entitled to operate beyond the boundaries of that section of the river assigned to him in his license. o Having reached Portland, the trio of fugitive convicts have made it more convenient for Oswald West, who is a resident of that city and who recently evinced a willingness to join in the pursuit. While Walt Pierce declined to accept West s challenge to join with him in the chase for Murray & Co., we notice that the Governor bars nobody in his offer of $1,000 reward for each of the escan?d men, dead or alive, and Os might as well pick up a few dollars while the "grand standing" is good. o Strength Fancy Gr PltKWS Br u.
