asked are how the convicts were
able to make daggers from files?
how they secreted the pieces of

let them down from the roof?
why they were able to step out of
the line marching to the dining

get to the roof and cut a hole In It?
Knives made from files are often
found hidden away in the prison
under all wardens. That Is his

It Is recalled that Harry T.racy

reassured that the fugitives are

by the report telephoned to the
prison that the Mcllhenv farm
house. 7 miles south of Hilverton.
was pillaged during the night.
Mrs. MWtheny reported that late
In the night she and her husband
heard someone enter the house.
She Java that they lay still In bed,
and that the prowlers wandered
over almost the entire house for
nearly half an hour, but did not
enter the bedroam. Nothing was
taken, perhaps, a little food the
woman said.
Mrs. Mcllheny said she could
not tell how many men were in the
house, but that they made a lot of
noises and apparently did not care
whether anyone heard them or
not.
Waiting for a time after the men
left the farm house, Ilyron McKI
heny notified the warden's office
at the penitentiary and guards
went to the place to investigate.
About ha f an hour later. Oregon
nntlonal guardsmen In the posse
from Hilverton saw the flash of a
light for an Instant moving down
Heaver Creek canyon, one-half mile
from Wllliird. as If some one had
lighted a match. They could tell
there was at hast one man, and
probably two.
The guardsmen opened fire with
their rlfes, but the suspects es
caped. The various posses this
morning were closely guarding an

which covers about twenty miles
