Tiie threat of war is ever oiAhe horizon. Millions of people are oppressed by heavy tax burdens and the general pros tration of industry. The American people ought to feel profoundly grateful ".-that we are not suffering from such conditions. We have . ,our troubles, but they are relatively light. Our tax burdens are far below what they have to bear. Our load of debt is small relative to our national wealth, as compared with the 'amount of debt they are carrying across the sea. We are getting today the fruitage of the courage, the energy, and the sacrifice of the ancestors and pioneers who established our country and its institutions, and who per formed the tremendous physical task of building and equip-J-ping a new country. They toiled and sweated, they fought the savages and they ploughed the fields and cut down the forest and con "'"structed roads and built railroads, and created a wonderful civilization, and we get the benefit. And many of us kick ...now because we have to work half as long hours as they did. j , The original settlers were bright enough to see that con editions over in Europe were too crowded, and that they could make a better country if they would start in a new land. It ' took a great deal of courage and the spirit of adventure, and involved harder work than if they had remained in their na ;;;tive lands. But they had the resolution to do it, and we "...benefit. Our hearts ought to be overflowing with thankfulness. We should remember the words of Scripture, "To whom much is given, of him shall much be required," and we . should contribute. generously of time and money to make it a good country, and to assist peoples and lands that are not so """-fortunate. ' Some of us think that the progress in civilization which is made by foreign countries does not affect us much. Such ones might well consider, however, what the advance in Ja pan has meant to the United States. That country with a population of 58,000,000 bought $283,000,000 worth of our goods in the I'J24 fiscal year, while China with nearly seven , .times as much population, bought only $121,000,000 of our St all. If China could advance to Japan's present point of ' tood government and civilization, we could according to - niiat, 80,11 them something like $2,000,000,000 worth of goods. We ought to be interested in the progress of a great country like China from humanitarian reasons. But if those can not "Cjiiuve borne of us, we may be. interested by the possibility of '".'helling them a couple of billions worth of American goods. ' ;iience Uie negotiations now pending for greater order and kecurity in that wonderful country, are related to the pros- - perity of every American village. State Press Comment Ami II- Won. Nathan Leopold made a bet with newspaper nun while be wan In his Chicago cell awaiting trial for the murder of little Hob by Franks. The bet was that neither ilernard (Irani, Kussell Scott nor himself would hutiK,, al though they were all Influx over whelming evlde:e of guilt. The bet la over. Leopold won. None of the three, de.-pite the I evidence against each, went to the I gallows. Leopold himself was , adjudged Insane, rio waa Scott. Grant waa killed by a fellow prisoner before ihe date of hang ing arrived. And who could fay that he, too, would not have been declared Insane before tho day of execution, as Scott was. Leopold s bet Is one Indication of why America leads the world In murders. Kven alter Ins ar rest and after he was- conscious of all tho evidence against biiu. the Chicago youth had no fear of the gallows. Ho was sure, be would escape tho death penalty. Looking over the number of those who had escaped It before him In spite of strong evidence against them, Leopold had a right to make a swagger bet. Ana be won! When criminals become sure they will not pay for their crimes. when they feel that It Is easy to escape the penalties preserved by law, what can be expected but a list of murders that shams the country and bests the world. "The Perfect Crime" Bulclde. and "suicide Is confes sion." has brought to a close the hectic drama of another "perfect crime," as scientifically planned as It was diabolically executed. Schwartz, the chemist, has Joined P.rumfield, the demist, wherever the souls of the damned may go. Kach of these murders was plan ned with Ingenuity, and yet each over-reached itself through the im possibility of controlling details that betrayed the author. A pair or clfuf'.red shoes aroused suspicion and led to the apprehension of Hrumfleld. The filling In Ihe teeth of Schwartz's victim furnished the clues of bis undoing. There was nothing particularly original In either crime. There have been many others sitnilarly rlanned, all with Uie common mo tive of swindling Insurnuce com panies by disappearance and the substitution of a disfigured corpse. In few of Ihese crimes, however. has murder of an innocent person been deliberately planned to fur nlsh the body. The rapidity wlih which plots were uncovered showed how clumsy they were, in spite of their supiKjscd cleverness. Once In a while, of course, a mur der mystery remains unsolved, hut In such cases luck rather than skill deserves the credit. The deliberate ly plauncd and thought out crime usually betrays Itself. ror murder, though it have no tongue, will speak . i With most miraculous orguu.- Saiem Journal.
