Jenkins, one of the bent known and most highly respect.-d pioneers of the upper Coquille val ley, who died here about midnight Thursday, was buried here today, interment being at Enchanted Prai rie. Mr. Jenkins would have been 95 years old on September 8 and was born In Kentucky. A blaze in the Cedar flat coun try, near Lebanon. Ore., Is burn ing fiercely today. Kire fighters from Lebanon were called out. The fire situation in the lower Columbia river rejr'n was report ed somewhat improved today, ow ing to a heavy fog. Reports from the upper Nehalem and the upper Young's river district, Indicated the fires there wero under con trol, at least temporarily. At Kerry, the great fire which burned south along the Kerry rullroud was checked, It having reached the Nehalem rlverwjn the south. The fire Is now within a mile and a half of the town of llirkenfeld, not having advanced since Satufday. Seely, was ac corded honorable mention by the scholarship committee of the Yale Alumni association, announcement of the awards being made today. Mr. Seely Is to enter Yale during the coming fall, and In writing for the scholarship gained the distinc tion of honorable mention, al though failing to secure the desired prize. Mr. Seely Is a graduate of the class of 1925, and expects to enter Yale for a medical course In the fall. In local school activities he stood very high, having an ac tive part In all student affairs, and participating also lo athletics. The scholarship was won by Charles Edward Wright, of Garden Home, Oregon. His twin sister, Miss Hilda Emily Wright, won the liryn Mawr scholarship. Dr. Seely this morning received a letter from Robert Trent Piatt, chairman of the scholarship com mittee, In which the young man is commended very highly. "You should be told," Mr. Piatt writes, "that your record upon ex amination was most satisfactory, and that while the average rank of Mr. Wright upon all subjects was slightly higher than yours, the difference was not such as to re flect any discredit upon your work, but, on the contrary, both of you are to be highly commended on the results of your entrance examinations. Pape, former German vice-consul here and former Port land manager of the Shanghai Building company, who is In jail here, charged with embezzlement of funds of the company, today filed suit In Federal court here against Edward Hell, secretary and general manager of the com pany, and Williura F. Merrick and the company for 9125,000. Pape alleged he had been made a victim of a conspiracy to de prive him of his position so that Merrick might get the place. The body of a man who the police say committed suicide on the bank of the Willamette river here last Friday, was this morning Identified as a 59-year old man, who had given his name as Jim Sullivan, and had roomed at a hotel here for the past three months. The body was found by accident Sunday night, Sullivan having selected a spot where he was out of view from the top of the bunk. Sullivan was register ed at a hotel here jib being from San Diego.
