(AuocUted Pna Lowed Win.) CALAIS, France, Aug. 5. The Eng.ish channel remains uncon- queied by woman. The icy waters, which has numbed so many swim mers, la:U night baited Mile. June Sum of France, when within one and one-quarter miles of her goal on the English coast. Mile. Slon was in the water 13 bouid 30 min utes. She made a gabant effort and came closer to success than any woman who ever tried to ne gotiate the treacherous 21 miles ol the channel between Cape Uris-Nex and Dover. In addition to establishing a rec ord for immersion by womt u, she came closer to the Knglish shore Uan any other of the several wo men who have tritd to swim across the channel from France to Eng land. Ietermined to accomplish the difficult feat, her courage did not fail, despite difficulties ofered 4y the perverse tides and the cold water. About 9 p. m., however, she began to feel numbness from the cold, mid at 9:40 p. m. she was taken aboard the tug which i brought her back to France. The lack of speed of the French woman is held to have been a con tributing factor to the non-success of her swim, as she was caught by outgoing tides three miles closer to the French shore than had been mapped out by the schedu e. I Had she been able to swim nine ' miles in the first four houra, as was the Intention, the experts say she would have touched the Eng lish shore about 10 o'clock last night. From their observations of Mile. Slon's attempt, close fol owera of these trials for years say that giv ; en conditions similar to those i which attended yester?ay'a swim, land with the water just a Utile ! warmer, Misa Gertrude Kderle, the j American girl swimmer, who Is waiting an opportunity to essay the channel swim, will succeed. Jabez WVlfe, who is training Miss Ederi believes that after four hours' swimming she will be I nearer tfn miles out than nine. War Hero Nearly Succeeds. LONDON, Aug. 5. Lieutenant Colonel Itemard Freyburg. ! World war hero and bidder of the Victoria Cross, lost by a scant ha f Imile today in Ms attempt to switu jthe English channel. After battling the treacherous j tides and currents of the chami"! I Lieutenant - Colonel Fn-yburg's 'gallant effort ended half a mil. off the shore at King's Down, between I H al and Dover. Previously, how ever, he was only 60fl yards from I'oint Hope, but his gnat exertions i had nearly exhausted him and lite tide, turning, carried him out to sea again. The pi o$ accompanying him i" the tug told the hwiminer that it would be four hours before another change in the tide would again n able hiui to approach the shore. : Lieutenant-Colonel Fteybmg then decided that became of the low tempeiature of the water and th imprubability that he could last for four more hours, be wou.d abandon the atumpt. 1 Colonel Freyburg ha long be-n famous as a swimmer.
