Colo., and In the vicinity of Golden, Colorado. Uulu-d States Geological Survey publications showing the geology of thu Denver basin delineate the dead faults. Many geo,oKisti be lieve such faults in California to have been Uie cause of the recent disastrous Santa ilarbara uuake. C. T. Lui'lon, a consulting geolo gist of Denver, says there 1b a well defined xona of dead fauds at least one-quarter of a mile wide aud ten to fifteen-miles long, between Den ver and Longuiont. f This zone containing a series of faults crosses North lioulder creek about one mile east of the old post- office of While Kock, in Uouider county, or four mUes east of the town of Krie. It runs southeaster ly to a point about midway be tween Louisville an d Marshall. OutcroppiuEs of cretacious rock. and formations revealed by some of the Northern Colorado coal mines have enabled geologists ana students of the BUbJect to locate and chart these faults, declares Mr. l.upton. There has been dis covered no evidence of movement in these faults for centuries4 it Is stuted. Two or three dead faults have been located north of North Tabie mountain, near Golden, also, but evidently these have been inactive for ages, too. Formations on one side of the fault north of Denver have been found to be from 600 to l.uuu feet deeper than on the oth er side, due to the sharp slip or fault In the earth's surface. Certain evidences of foldings In Uie earth's surface have been dis covered in southeastern Colorado, and near llasweli, Juet west of Kads, In Kiowa county, there have been reports of very slight earth tremors within recent years ac cording to Mr. Lupton.
