Orecon poultry keeping requires better judgment op closor obsorvutton than that of feeding poultry for profit. Hot ter results aro secured when tho fowls aro fed according to their appetite rathr llian by rulo, says the experiment station. There is no best poultry feed or rutlon other than tho one which supplies most economically the ntceasury food elements. When food value Is considered, some poultry Iced at t-i per hundred pounds Is of ton more expensive than other leeds at 15 per 100 pounds. Young chicks from four' to six weeks are often, attacked by a germ that lives In the soli over several years, says A. G. Lunn, ! head of poultry Husbandry at tne I O. A. C. experiment station. Tu effected ehicas show droopy wings, I ruffled feathers and general weak ! ness. 1'he strong a well as the weak chicks are attacked. i.x- perlmental work Indicates that they are then not able to digest , hard grain and snould be fed moist i mash three times a day. Treat ment also includes moving the chicks to clean ground and dis infecting the brooders wltn a 10 per cent solution ot crude carbolic acid. Epsoin salts at the rate one fourth pound to the mash tor 100 chicks, and hydrochloric acid at the rate of one leaspoonful to a gallon ot water, are also re- j commended. The best legumes are heavy I lime feeders. A two ton crop lot Oregou clover used about 150 I pounds of limestone in its growth. Small grains, grasses, and corn use much les lime than legumes because there are no nodules and bacteria in their roots. Liming is recomnnnded by the experi ment station ouly on soils that aro , acid or known to need lime. MADE A NEW WOMAN OF HER That Is Wha Lydia E. Fink ham'sVegetableCompound Did for Mrs. Jenkins Tho small dark colored teeth protruding at ihe base of a young pis s regular teeth aro not neces sary and should be removed, says tho O. A. C. experiment station. A pair of nippers is a good tool to use for this and tho teeth should be broken off rather than pulled. If these are allowed to remain pips are likely to injure each otner when fighting, und also to get sore mouths. These teeth csn be removed whMi the pig Is but a day or so old. Oregou farmers find more and more profit in growing pure strains of ihe right varieties of seed. A recent report to tire need testing laboratory at the Cr vallis station says that the seed testing service Is a wonderlul help, us "it gives ns, a mvan of Identifying the higher quality seed that wo aim to handle." This means., suys the station, that the demund will be greater and the prlro nlghvr for good quality' pure seed. Oregon farmers usually proper to use line stone which contiilns some rock ground to a dust pow der and some which is ground to pass through a 10 mesh sieve. The fine alone tweetelis the soil quickly and the coarser material remains longer to keep it sweet. Only on acid soils and boIIs known to be deficient in lime, is the use of lime rvcomtneded by the Ore gon experiment station. Counties that have been soil surveyed have tuch Information on record A good home-made spray for file on dairy cattle has l-een r nuesied so frequently from the college dairy department by Ore gon dairymen that itoy C. This method of selling is on the increase. The main factor in mail order selling Is to have a package that will not leak. The best package is the screw-top cau in tho quart and two-quart sizes, packed in an in expensive corrugated mailing car ton. One bee-keeper in the north west started advertising his honey in two ladles' magazinos ot na tional circulation, with the result that today he is doing a big busi ness and bays honey by the car lot to take car of hiB mall order business. One bee-keeper las; year made 100 mail order sales by advertising once in a weekly newspaper having state-wide cir culation. This mode of selling, undertatken in a limited way at first, will grow with experience. The great migration Is at hand. Just as the birds of passage wing their way northward at the begin ning of the summer season, so are countless motorists of California pointing thelrr adlators toward the pleasant valleys and snow-kissed hills of Oregon. "Reports from the General Pe troleum Corporation's offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco," states C L. Fies, ''are to the ef fect that we snomd prepare tor the greatest influx ot visitors from tne soutniaud Uiat has ever moved northward along the Pacific high way. Previous years Mere have been bad road conditions, many de tours', or some other dliticuitles tnat have deterred many troni' making this trip, and It seems that all the accumulated enthusiasm fur travel will find "Its outlet this season. "Koad conditions have never been so attractive; and there are a number of big conventions and gatuerings here in Stattle which offer special inducements or ex cuses lor the trip. "Our own organisation 1b using its best efforts to make tne way easy for tourists by arranging tor adequate supplies of Utneral gaso line tnrouglioui this territory. Last touring season distribution was fairly well established over west ern Washington, but the "green and white" signs were strange to tne motorists from the south. This year many of those who come from California will welcome these signs as old friends and will recognize them as the badge of the same type of efficient service they have learned to depend upon at home. "From the time they slide down the Blope ot the Siskiyous and strike the Oregon line until they roll across the International boun dary and into Vancouver, B. C, they will find Independent service stations, which carry General gaso- Iline and lubricants, located at tae most convenient points, and they can be assured of the advantages of this powerful, peppy gas during I all nf Iheli- northern Lrio. "On the other hand, Oregon mo torists who are planning to tour the Washington highways or drive to Frisco this summer will be able to keep their engines contented on the same kind of dependable fuel they have grown used to since the time when their owners Hist filled up tho tank and gave them a chance to decide." . , Havo you a Hernia? Dirty milk is expensive as a gift and clean milk is cheap at any price. Dirty milk results In complaints, loss of confidence in the milkman who puts it on the market, and direct loss through replacements of milk due souring.. Cleanliness In the barn largely determines the amount of dirt in milk. Care on the part of keep ers in currying and grooming ani mals, washing the 'udder Just be fore milking, and general clean liness around the stalls, with clean habits on the part of the milker are the determining factors ill obtaining clean milk. Smooth, durable, non-absorbing utensils of such a nature that they can be easily washed and sterilized, are ideal for the milk house and barn. Milking with small top milk pails keeps most of the dirt out of the milk.
