Efforts soon will be made to ex ploit the vast mineral wealth of the Dead Sea. and Palestine, the richest country In he world for potash resources, may begin to yield up some of its riches. A government announcement says that In view of the existence In the waters of the Dead Sea of certain minerals, the winning mi! marketing of which for commercial purposes Is believed to be practi cable, the crown agents for the' colonies, acting on behalf of the government of Palestine, are pre pared to receive applications for the grant ot rights to undertake operations. ' The volume of the Dead Sua Is ' somewhere In the neighborhood of 120,000,000,000 cubic meters, hence the area contains roughly 30,000.000,000 tons of mixed sails, of which possibly 1,500,000.000 tons are potassium chloride. The sails occur as a strong; brine, immediate ly ready for evaporation and cry stallization for the production of pure salts by the natural heat of the sun. The average percentage of salts In the brine la at least 25 per cent, of which 34 per cent is sodium chloride, four to seven per cent potassium chloride, and up to one per cent or more of magnesium bromide. The surface of the Dead Sea lies 1292 feet below the sea level. It is 4tt miles long and 19 miles w ide, as big as the lake of tieneva. It Is es timated that 6,500,000 ions of water fall into It dally, ilecause of the extraordinary evaporalloncaused by tho Intense heat, tho water Is Im pregnated wllh mineral substances, of which common salt constitutes seven per cent. Fish cannot live In the Dead Sea, which destroys nearly all organic life.
