SUMMER ADVERTISING jThe time of year has come when retail business may lie a little dull unless something is done to put singer into it. Tji the years before advertising became such a tremendous flower, the two months of midsummer were quite a dreary rieriod of retail trade. Many merchants resigned themselves to a time of slim trade. They considered that many families were away and that people had bought most of their stuff, and it was not much use to struggle for business. But many hustling concerns decided that they would not let their over head and sales expenses pile up that way without effort to male this part of the year a profitable one. So they began advertising bargains freely, and the public responded gen yrokisly, as it always will when it sees a chance to save dollar. As a result many of these concerns became able tc do a great deal of business through these so-called dull months. Many buyers formed the habit of wi iting for thit period, as a time when special bargains could naturally be expected, and doing a large amount of their shopping dur ing this time. They are disappointed if their favorite stores do not offer them chances for special values at this time The idea that business must be dull because many people a. qway, does not necessarily hold good. While many . a away, many remain, and many strangers are among us who are reading the local newspaper. They are glad to try out what our stores have to offer, if they see favorable an: nouncements of prices. Anyway the merchants of Rose Burg who have used advertising extensively in this period 6j former years, have been rewarded by very favorable re Bult8, ' -..Ji WUj ,.-. :; o : VARIETY THE SPICE OF SLOGANS Trade-marking a town has become so common a habit Chat the question of competition seems to be entering in the practice. Some towns and cities whose virtues havt Been compressed into a slogan discover that others ha Adopted the same formula. The wayfarer, hypothetical!, peaking, who might be exhorted to "Anchor in Akroi. might be invited also to "Anchor in Ashtabula." The secretary of the Huntington, West Virginia, Chum ice of Commerce, taking cognizance of the confusion that &as resulted, has suggested the establishment of a "slogan ixdhangc" which would perform the same function as a registry division for trade-marks',, Consejuently thp Organ ization Bureau of the Chamber rrf jjimereo of the United Slates has agreed to act in that capacity anil will inform fities, upon i-i plication, whether the slutfa.i thr.y have coined has already been thought of by another city. o The old timers with their simple standards would be dismayed if they know how much a young person is supposed to learn in these days to make his own way in the world To note just one thing as an instance, schools and colleges are putting in courses on "personnel management." Here seems to be a factor having much to do with advancement. The manager who can pick the right person for the right place, and keep all his different individualities wi.rking to gether harmoniously, has a gift that big concerns will value. Some will question how such a subtile art can bo taught from lectures and text-books. They will say it has it be learned by long processes of experience. But a school course at least can set people to making those minute observations of Jiuman conduct that enable one in time to be a skilful man ager of people. Also the ambitious young person who is not able to take such a course can form this same habit with Useful results. Z One of the most beautiful types of charity of our times tjikes children from congested city districts, and gives them fl summer outing in some healthful country spot. Such an experience must be a revelation to many who never saw i cow or a sheep, and never heard bird songs except from the varieties that frequent city parks. Such youngsters ma ilit be attracted to the quiet of a country home, which would probably seem dull and tame to them. But at least they are Shown that it will pay them to work for a home in a health ful community vihere they will have room to breathe and develop naturally. Fancy Grocer A.C. pams BY ' o.
