In giving to readers of the News-Review the Asociated : Press leased wire service this paper takes a Jot of pride. ;jhere is no other news-gathering machinery quite so com plete, so exact in its efforts to gain the truth of all national happenings as the Associated Tress. It is so. organized that the public is assured of the fairest and most impartial dis semination of all news happenings national and olhor--wise that go to make up the tremendous sum total of the association's distribution every day of the week. : The history of the Associated Press was told in. the 'following words at a recent gathering honoring the twenty fifth anniversary of its president, Mr. Frank B. Noyes: "- "When there was being written an unpleasant chapter 'of American history a record of the rapid growth of mon opoly and special privilege and the brazen association of monied interests and political parties a group of farsighted .'and patriotic publishers caught the vision of an aroused and enlightened public opinion: A public opinion upon which -would be reared a political and social structure that should endure. To this end they set about, first to wrest the con trol of the press of the United States, whose editorial pol icies were consistently reflected in the news columns, from : a handful of men who were in position to exploit both pub ; Ushers and readers to their personal advantage. Next to ; assure through the cooperation of newspaper publishers a news report absolutely free of political bias or propaganda , ;and which would be a simple recital of the day s venis a solid foundation for straight thinking. Successful in the f Initial step, a fruition of the general plan, through the ; agency adopted, was frustrated by legal technicalities and, '. aftor an existence of seven years, the Associated Press, I Incorporated in Illinois, surrendered its charter. Morally ; triumphant in defeat, these journalistic crusaders began ; anew. , Avoiding legal shoals, they advanced the coopera- live idea in a new form and on May 22, 1900, obtained a tfiarter at Albany, N. J., which provided for all they had " hoped to do. r : "So was born the Associated Press of today!" ; .' Governor Pierce is being urged to appoint George L. .Cleaver, former state prohibition director, to the office of ' state game warden. The petition, among other things says ;"he is strong and healthy," and "-his experience fits him for the position." Being "strong and healthy" is a good acquisi - tion for a game warden. It would probably save some gaso .line and tire trouble, for a "strong and healthy" fellow could l"hoof" it about and cover a lot of mountain streams as a . sort of summer recreation. But, we fail to discern where j 'mny .'Mr. Cleaver's "experience" as state prohibition director be made to encompass in iu grasp Br BERT & BATES GOOD EVENING FOLKS Yeetlddy while makln' A pun concernin' "The Barefoot Boy" Wa askjd one of tha Office fore who Wrote the pome and Ha eaid "Longfallar" And we want ahead And today wa found out That Whittler waa The author of It And we hereby .Alopolgjze to both Of 'am and wonder If our pencil.pu.Bhor Thinka Irving Berlin Wrote the Star 8pangled Banner. i i DUMBELL DORA THINKS Sag (.retain' It tha clothes a wittvguy wwri, fr 4 Tha local flra laddie ara think In' of aignin' Billy HelnlJna up for tha dept. On a blackboard waa written a recelpe for cake-baking. The cabinet member's brow wrinkled as be studied the written Instructions. "What does B. P. ataud for?" be' asked the instructor. "Bakiug powder," answered the teacher. Some folks In these parts are afraid Secretary W'ork'a ideas are eastern. Hut his conversation and his drawl are decidedly western, j In an ea.sy, winning way he ques-' tloned instructors and students a? he passed through the buildings. ' "You have those scissors upside; down," he said to an Indian maiden from Montana who was cutting out, pieces for a garment in the domes- tic arts .department. j "Where you from?" he asked an-! other. "California," the girl replied. I "Do you want to go back there?"' "I surely do." "That's funny," the secretary ' said. "I don't see why you want to go back to California' when you can stay here." "Where are you from?" Pr. j Work asked an instructor in an other department "From Alabama," the young wo-' man said. "She won't stay long," the cab!-' net member remarked to the su-i perintendent, who was showing' him about the school. "When they look like that they soon get mar ried." The Indian problem la a big one, Secretary Work declared, Jmt the big part of it is not in the 'schools, but after the Btudents leave the schools. "The thing to do." he said, "is to teach them the things by which they, can make" a living after they are out of schools." ECONOMY! Thrift and economy go hand in hand.
