(Associated Press Leased Wire.) ' SANTA BARBARA, Cal., June 29. Ten million dollar damage, 12 known dead and virtual destruction of most of the business buildings on State street resulted from an earth quake here at 6:45 a. m. today. The scene of the destruction was visited by a staff man from the Los Angeles office of the Associated Press. - The main scene of destruction is State street, the principal thoroughfare. The Sheffield water supply reservoir dam burst and flooded the east side adding to the terror of the inhabi tants. Buildings practically destroyed include the Samarkand Hotel, New Calf ornia Hotel, San Marcos Building, Elks Building, First National Bank, American Legion Building, Public Library, Moose Hall, KngihU of Columbus Hall, Presbyterian Church, Hall of Records, County Jail, fcl Nido Hotel, St. Francis Hospital, St. Vincent Orphanage, the latter two new and costly struc tures. The main section of the Arlington Hotel came down. - Mrs. Charles H. Perkins, widow of the former president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad, was reported killed in the debris of the Arlington Hotel. The towers and a isction of the front wall of the old Santa Barbara mission fell to the street while a number of worshippers were celebrating a mass. . . Others reported dead were: u . i William Matthews, lather, killed in his autp by wreckage from the California Hotel. D. Santor, killed in a State street garage. Dr. James Angel, dentist, killed in his office in the San Marcos Building. --' Patrick Shea, gardner at the St. Anthony's College. . Two undentified Mexicans and Chinese. ' Miss Carter, maid, killed in the Arlington Hotel. The injured were removed to the Cottage Hospital. Naval reservists aided peace authorities in establishing lines of control around the ruin ed area: . All traffic into Santa Barbara was halted al tha outskirts of the city. Relief stations were opened in the city hall. At noon when the first telegraph wire to t ie outside world was obtained, the list of dead was 12, although the toll will be greater, it is feired, when some of the fallen walls are remov ed, as it is thought several persons were trapped in the debris. Scores of persons were hurt, although most of the injuries were of a minor nature. The city is without power or gas. The water supply of the city was badly damaged. , Sheffield reservoir, which is the immediate source of the city's water was demolished, but the flow from the main dam high in the mountains seems unchecked. The San Marcus building, the largest office building in the city, was practically demol ished. The north wing of the Jour-story structure fell in a tangled heap and it is feared that several persons are dead under the piles of brick and plaster. . , ,, The New California Hotel, just completed, is a hopeless wreck. The outside walls shook down but the main portion of the build ins is still standing. The Carillo Hotel also suffered seriously f rem the quake. Throughout the residential section of the east side, residences were tilted in topsy turvy S The tremors tsarted at a steady, slow east-west motion, which cracked brick walls and then the next moment the movement turned to a northeast-southwest movement of great severity which worked great havoc. . The quake did little damage along the coast highway north of here. At Coleta, 12 miles north, chimneys were wrecked, one garage nearly demolished and much glass Broken. At one point about 20 miles north the hi ghway was closed for an hour by a dirt slide, The pavement was broken at intervals for ten miles north. Thoro wm no smnreeiahle damage at anv D oinl north of Goleta. The quake was felt, however, as far as San 'Luis Obi?o, 114 miles north of here, TinnfnP win i i 0 nnifliwiopifs QUAKE BULLETINS COL.
