Johnson of Port land, who escaped from the city 'ja.il Sunday and was recaptured In the afternoon of that day, repeated I his performance last night, and was : successful In making hia getaway. I The boy, who was being held Mr running away from home, waa kept In close confinement following his break Sunday, but yesterday eve ning waa released from his cell for a few minutes to be given an op tunity to exercise in the main cor ridor, and when the officer was ab sent for a few minutes slipped again through the small bole in the barred window, and reached a safe aiding place. The youngster spread the bars on Sunday, using a abort length of board, which he had slipped through a window. The bars bad not been straightened, and It was an easy matter for him to go through the bole a second time. Officers serened for him but were unable to locate him, and It is sup posed that he is now well on his way into California. The boy is on his second run away trip having been arrested here in May and returned home. His mother came Cor him and took him home upon the first occasion, and had expected to do so again, but Is 111 now and had asked the city officers to hold the boy until she could come ror mm In view of the fact that this is the second time a boy has escaped from the city Jail, the council has reached the conclusion that the cells are hardly sturdy enough for housing criminals, and the health and police committee was authoriz ed last night to make the neces sary repairs to strengthen the Jail.
