SUCCESS WITHOUT EDUCATION ' This great majority of us here in Roseburg have not had the higher education. As we read of the conferring of diplomas by fine universities and colleges, the thought comes to jnany that they will never amount to much because they have not had the same privileges. ""And yet thousands of men have gone ahead without education. Some may have done so by crooked means or through luck, yet 90 per cent of them showed real achieve ment. Somehow they had powers of perception or leader ship, by which they could make their way, The higher education is never wasted where its lessons are truly applied. Still one can succeed in business without itif one has the old fashioned quality called gumption. The essential thing is close observation of human nature and the world, ability to see what people want and how to meet the . needs. o .. Now that the city boxing commission has been author- ized, further argument pro and con would be a waste of words. Give it a fair trial and let it be borne in mind that the sport must be clean, because the city council can repeal the ordinance just as easily as that body enacted it Let the .. ring contests be a credit to the athletic following and con '; tinucd public approval will be the reward; abuse the priv ilege and its life will be short i 0 The American Legion drum corps, Oregon's champion .. organization, is rehearsing nightly for their appearance at the Prineville convention. Umpqua Post's corps should be able' to "bring home the bacon" again this year judging from the pep they are putting into their practice. o Oakland is making big preparations for the July 4th ' celebration. Those who attended the last event will remem- ber the fine entertainment provided by the Gobblers and '. - will be ready aud willing to spend Independence Day around 2 thir splendid race track this year. -o pioccs BY". In a close and Interesting game of baseball last night, the Amer ican Legion team of the twilight league defeated the Christian team tiy a score of 4 to 3. The Christians lost an opportunity to tie tha score In the final inning, when a runner froze to third base following the catch of a long fly In center field, having ample op port unity to acore, but falling to obey the Instructions of the base line coach. In the fourth Inning the Legion hum pulled out of a bad hole, when the Christians filled the b &wes with none out. John Ge rety the Legion pitcher, fanned the next three ballera in a row, and saved the team from defeat. The Leglbn got two runa in each of the first two Innings, and af ter that were Ireld scoreless, but the Christians lacked the punch to win. Buv Gooseberries for canning now. The sudden death of Julius Kruttschnitt, probably tire fore most railroad executive of the pre sent generation, calls attention to the astonishing number of heart fatalities the past few months. Only a few days ago Vice-President Marshall dropped off sud denly only a few weeks after Gen eral Miles. John Singer Sargent a few weeks before, was a victim of the same ailment, and only three days ago Warren S. Stone, famous, railroad labor leader, sud denly died from heart attack. Perhaps the medical fraternity can find some cause for this ap parent epidemic, but what we are interested in is the desirability of such an earthly departure. To Bttddenly drop off. without protracted llinesH, without suf fering or pain, aid after a life of usefulness, la certainly the Ideal way to go. Med ford Tribune. till Benjamin Citlow. former N.
