Almost immediately. Cleo makes an enemy of the major's catty wife, by tilling a funny story. Iteing left alone on the balcony, Cleo overhears some pertinent conversation between Rita Thorn dlke and tho colonel. THE TRUTH AllOt'T RITA The colonel's speech about Rita having pity for him seemed to galvanize her rnto life. "Pity, pity!" . she exclaimed. "Who has had any pity for tire In all this? Not mthusband. who promised before witnesses to care for me and protect me. Not you. certainly, who have protested again and ngain that you loved me better than all ctsw In the world. Pity! It Is the kind of pity that the ravenous tigers of the arena have for a human being after their first taste of blood. "Do you realize that I was not quite t.?venteen years old when I married Hill Thorndlke and I lev ed him with the unreasoning de votion of a'rhlld? I was a girl so young and God forgive my mother so Ignorant with that Ignorance which foolish people cull innocence, that I lool ed up to him as a god. "I know my mother was glad to get rid of me for sh'3 was young too, as widows go. and a girl in long dresses was a great handicap to her. She helped me to believe that the man 1 was marrying would make me per fectly happy and I believed In her. "She too betrayed me, for she knew something of the character of Hill Thorndlke. I believed In my husband until he had betray ed everv confidence and trust 1 rut In him and then one day when I accused him of this he said that I knew It when I married him and thnt my mother knew It and so at one fell swoop I lost, by wore than denth. both my hus band and my mother. Then. God help me. I believed in you. Yoti came to me In sym pathy you were pood to me. You made mo believe in you, and I stayed here In this place where the women wer" talking and the men looking upon me with liisttul -ye .lust becauve you, for the moment thought I made the place a bit more amusing for you. I could rerl It cut like a rapier and 1 kuew that Colonel IWldon was cringing In the darkness. "I knew that neither of you talked over your plans with tho other, but I ulso knew just us surely as you both knew that each of you 'gentlenven' knew the other's mind.
