Jum 6 The Riff Ian tribesmen have launched the strongest and best organised offen sive ilnca their invasion of French Morocco with a drive against Ta ounat in the middle of the front. i Official reports any AbdEl Krim's men temporarily gained 'some ground, crossing the Ouer- gha at several points but were re pelled by the French. The latter In a series ot counter attacks re-occupied some of the ' posts north of the stream which i were abandoned during the volun ' tary evacuation of that tone last Tbe Rlfflana used no artillery. I ducted with the greatest flerce iness the tribesmen have yet shown iAbd-El-Krim used Rlffian regulars. his best shock troops In the attacks jbut the French declare they were I mowed down by machine gun fire and that their losses were extreme ly heavy. rn Kiinans usea no aruiiery, but their forces were larger than in any previous operation ot the campaign. The pitched battle last ed from daybreak to sunset yester day, French reports said. Abd-El-Krim's "shock troops" got their first real taste of modern warfare In a stinging defeat in which the Rifflans warriors fought valiantly but were forced back by the French from all points north of the Ouergha river, which they bad briefly occupied. The fierceness and stubbornness ot Abd-El-Krlm's attack was inter preted by the French as meaning his original Intention to reach Fez. Taounat, his Immediate objective, is the key to the crossing of the Ouerkha. t It was learned that a Frenco Spanlsh mixed commission will be appointed soon to discuss methods of establishing a blockade by France and Spain of the north African ports of AdJIr and Alhuce mas. where the Rifflans have been receiving arms and munitions.
