T. Scopes brought the biology text book situation of the state under fire. Scopes was charged with ex plaining the theory of evolution to students after he bad read a pas- sage from a biology text book i authorized by the state. Mr. Neil, I In a letter to Governor Austin Peary, urged that the selection of a text book on biology for use In the hlKh schools be deferred until the Scopes case was decided, threatening criminal prosecution against the. book commission If It chose a work containing any ref erence to evolution. Declaring that every standard work on science accepts evolution and that he was sure no scientist would consent to have his book mutilated to fit ihe Tennessee law, Mr. Neil said that if the anti-evolution law was upheld after the commission bad adopted a book accepting evolution, science teach ers of the state would be in the same position as Scope "of either refusing to comply with his duty to teach the books selected or of violating the law." June 2.-.Of 196 cities and towns In Oregon only 17 including Portland, have rejected the opportunity for their peace of ficers to come under the protec tion of the Work mens Compensa tion Act, and of 36 counties, only nine have filed rejections with the commission. The 1925 legislature amended the act so that the salari ed peace officers of all cities, towns and counties come under the act automatically unless the municipalities- formally reject the act by notifying the commission. The cities and towna that have rejected the act are: Portland, leaver Hill, Mllwauklo. Corvallis, Springfield, Itainier, Jacksonville, Aihena, Banks, Pilot Rork, Klgln, Burns. Halsey, Island City, Lake side, Enterprise, Nyssa. , The counties that have rejected the act are: Multnomah, Clatsop. Jackson, Curry, Umatilla, Lincoln, Coos, Douglas, Clackamas, J .
