ECONOMY DRIVE ;jIFear is expressed by some that the drive which Fresi- . dent Coolidge has been making for government economy, ansLthe sample he is said to have set in some instances of personal thrift, are hurting business by discouraging people from buying goods, so that something like the "buyers's strike'! of 19'JO is thought in some cases to be starting in. Sud'den spasms of anything, either of extravagance, or of -.saving, are not desirable. If some elements of people who a little while ago were buying with great freedom, are now exercising parsimony, the result must be to create stoppage of mportaut industries that depend upon rather regular purchases. Yet whatever the evils may be that flow from extreme thrift, they are far less than those coming from 'extravagance. Free spending creates the feeling among producers, that the public will pay high prices for goods. Whan people buy at high prices, that so depletes their re sources that before long they find themselves unable to buy "Hie things they really need. If savings are used to deposit -1H good banks or for the purchase of thoroughly sound and " Approved securities, they finance enterprises that keep labor employed. The best way is for the people to study their in comes carefully and decide how much they ought reasonably to spend, and save, the rest, and keep up this habit year after year- This will prevent these sudden spasms of spend ing and refusal to spend which are upsetting to the commer cialVorld. Probably the fears expressed above are exagger ated, and very likely what the business world needs is a lit tle more advertising, to show the people the advantages of buying at the present time. A lady remarks, that when a certain friend of hers gets - in the morning and finds it is raining, she will stay abed aS-day. A travelling salesman also says that he finds it very hard to sell goods in rainy weather. He thinks many men are depressed by such atmospheric conditions, and take a less hopeful view of their situation and will not buy. It seems foolish for people thus to be influenced by exterior circumstances. Healthy persons at least should have such " 'a natural confidence and buoyancy that any old weather "Would look good to their hopeful feelings. .".". o William J. Bryan's heart may be"in the grave," as that gitleman sadly announced a few years ago after the na tional democratic convention rejected his prohibition plunk, '.' but his organs of speech are still above ground and working .nn all 12 cylinders. fBIGCTlS IKED FOR while the Dlllanl lorn la ranked aa one of the best la the county. This fact was pointed out to Andrew W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury, at a recent confer ence In Washington. The motor clubs and farm organizations have been opposing these war taxes from the users' standpoint: and the automobile manufacturers sought this conference to call at tention to the burden which this tax imposes on low cost transpor tation. List prices of automobiles are under pre-war 29 per cent less than in 1114. To present prices, however, are added the war tax which the consumer pays. The automobile makers who have devel oped production economies and pas-1 sd the savings on to the public, ask to have this Federal tax bur den removed in the belief that wide spread low-cost motor trans-, portation Is sound national econo my. Administration leaders at Washington have indicated that there will be a $300,000,000 reduc tion In taxes at tbe next session of Congress. Among the reasons advanced against this Federal ex cise tax -levy on automotive pro ducts are: 1. It is a tax on trans portation; 2. It is a special tax, in addition to all the other general levies which motor vehicle makers; and users pay; 3.
