THE QUIET GIRL I .-.A young woman who has Jiad, experiences in business positions in several cities, expresses some dissatisfaction With the kind of girl to whom the average man seems to be attracted, according to her point of view. She is impressed with the idea that the girls that seem to be the most popu farare those that throw themselves at the men rather con spicuously and effusively, and are rather easy going in piatters of conduct. There are many men who can always be won by a free and aggressive type of young woman, and that kind of marriage is going on all the time. How many Of them remain married a long time might be a question for .the sociology class to investigate. Quiet and reserved girls sometimes talk rather bitterly, because they seem to be left behind in the competition for attention. They can console themselves with the idea that not all these prizes are worth any struggle. There are many girls who have what the boys call "pep", who are full of vivacity and en thusiasm, and yet who have the keen sense never to step over the line of correct manners. If the men show a ten dency to overstep that line, they are called down with a rnocking rebuke, that tantalizes and stings a bit, and makes tibse elusive maidens all the more alluring. Perhaps the quiet girls need to wake up a little and cultivate conversa tional powers and see a little more of the humor of their surroundings. They may set aside something of their seri ousness of manner without loss of dignity. However, there are times in which the men admire the women who can do things, whether it be in athletics or the business office. The men Who are caught by aggressiveness, and are not impressed by a sweet disposition and intelligence, make a poor bargain for future happiness. o It is no small Job to manifest a sophisticated familiar ity .'with the latest pet expressions of the advanced clement, liven the college students, who are supposed to originate "WaAy wierd sayings, often have to confess themselves ig norance of some new eccentricity that has come up from the back side of nowhere. The youth of today uses many expressions the meaning of which it could not define There are few who could make a precise statement of just what Jdoas are conveyed by "Apple sauce," "raspberries," 'cake-eater", "the cat's meow", etc., etc. While the free niserof such expressions may be amusing within limits, too much of it gives the impression that one is quite conscious if his own smartness and originality. The masses of the .'people are a little slow to pick up the most advanced . Iphrases, and one must still speak plain English to make a marked impression on the average mind. o - One of the principal automobile dangers is that ot -accidents due to collision of cars at intersecting streets. "Some drivers keep their eyes so firmly fixed on the track Shead of them, that they rarely turn a glance to the inter secting streets. When two fast drivers with this Jinbit meet at such a point, the collision often occurs at a terrific rate of speed . Automobile operators should also realize that it does not pay to insist too strenuously on their right ."of way. If you see some speeder coming from a side street twho claims a little more than belongs to him. it is far bet ter to let him have it than to take chances of a mouth in .the hospital. o - The hanging at Salem today was reported the most gruesome ever witnessed at the penitentiary. It was no more horrible than the crime for which penalty was admin istered. But the published facts will be fine morsels of food for the sob-sisters of this state who are grooming "murderers and all sorts of criminals for a place in society. !As an object lesson to the criminally inclined the "exhibi tion" ought to prove of some benefit.
