ROSEBURG, OREGON TUESDAY, MAY 19, 1925 THE AIMLESS ELEMENT Most cities a. id towns have their element of aimless young; men and boys, who cherish no active purpose in the world. They are commonly seen loafing around at favorite resorts and on the curbstones. They watch other people play games, and do not play much themselves for lack of mtmey. Uicy stand with open mouths watching the peo ple go by, and are disappointed if there is not a fire or a drunken man or a fight or something else to create excite ment. Then there is the aimless girl element, who are seen oil the streets much of the time, anxious for flirtations with the above described boys, who are always ready to "pick (Earn up." They may pay their parents little or nolliing for board and they are not apt to help much with the home work. But they manage to go to most of the shows, and are quick to accept automobile rides from strangers. These young people had the opportunities for school ing that the other children get, but most of them never stood well in school. Other things seemed more interesting. Commonly they drop out early, feeling out of their clement inong those who are trying to do real work, perhaps indue- by some job that offers them a little pocket money for their sporting desires. It is difficult to do much with them after they get started in these aimless paths. But if taken early, they can almost invariably be prevented from acquir ing these wrong points of view. What are they doing with their spare time. What are they doing alter dark and in the back alleys, and hang-outs? Whose ideas are they following, their gang leaders and the smart guys, or those of their teachers and real friends? '- ' Those who belong to societies where ideals of achieve ment are held up before them, like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, do not usually get these aimless ways. Next Monday is going to be a real patriotic day in ftoseburg one of those days that go down, in history with a 'decided accomplishment. Do you know what is going to happen Monday?
