Douglas County was well repre
sented in the county declamation
contest held at Jtoht-burg Saturday
evening. Twelve contestants in di
vision one, 12 In division 2 and 10
in division three made a total of 34
youthful declaimers, w ho represent
ing, as each did, the winner in each
sectional contest, indicates a grow
ing interest in declamation work in
the county. The winners are as
follows:

For the first time since its be
ginning, the declamatory contests
were held the Saturday evening
preceding the annual field and
track events. The committee felt
that larger audiences might enjoy
the contests, judges would be eas
ier obtained, and that the day
would not be so strenuous for
many who might compete in both
declamation and., track. They be
lieve the results show the change a
wise one and that added Interest
will result. All are now looking to
ward the field and track contests
to be held In Laur.dwood field on
Friday afternoon. May 22. to see
who will win the banners. The
committee report the number of
contestants larger than usual.

AVIATOR IN CITY
Captain L. H. Young and wife,
representing H. O. Proce and com
pany, a Seattle advertising con
cern, were in the city today. Cap
tain Young was one of the Ameri
can fliers during the World War,
enlisting with the Canadian flying
corps in 1!)15 and being transferred
to the V. S. flying corps following
the entrance of this country into
the struggle. He Is the sole survi
vor of the battle of six American
planes and 12 German planes at
Verdun. His plane was brought
down by the Germans, and he fell
several thousand feet, both logs, a
shoulder and jaw bone being1 broken.
