It is a perfectly logical happening, tor no other four delivers the Maxwell combination of 58 miles an hour, 5 to 25 miles in 8 seconds, and 25 miles to a gallon of gasoline. Tmrlni Car. Kdjir. This is an advantage of genuine importance to the buyer. In no other way could you be assured of the quality that distinguishes the new good Maxwell from all other fours. It is this high quality that accounts very largely for the dependable nature of Maxwell performance, the car's durability and, above all, costs of operation and maintenance so low as to create a new stand, ard of economy. We are always eager to demonstrate the new good Maxwell, for a ' ride in the car proves at once that it offers more fine motoring than was ever before available at the price. j J. W. MICHAEL MOTOR COMPANY 515 North Jackson St., Roseburg . Phone 350 B ETTER AND B ETTE R Dependable ten years ago, and five years ago, and more dependable than ever today, Dodge Brothers Motor Car simply represents the latest phase in a process of continual betterment The first cars Dodge Brothers built established a world-wide reputation. . The cars they are building today in corporate the accumulated refine ments of those ten intervening years. That important improvements in the comfort and appearance of the car are made from time to time, implies no basic departure from Dodge Brothers traditional policy of progressive rather than seasonal development' J. 6. Newland & Son DODGE BROS. DEALERS Roseburg, Oregon Phone 458 THE MAXWELL CAR A statement of the Maxwell Chrysler engineers that a 15 per cent increase In horse power has been .accomplished in the new Maxwell without Increasing bore or stroke, stated J. W. Michael, local Maxwell-Chrysler dealer, ap parently has considerable to do with the new engineering achieve ments of combining into the, new Maxwell models, for the first time in low priced motor cars, the three assets of economy, speed and flexibility. These sweeping Improvements are said to have been made possible through rede signing the cylinder block, chang ing valves and valve seats, im proving the cooling system and lenghthning the pistons. Auto motive engineers are (authority for the statement that with a pro per basic design a combination of two of these asoests of economy, speed and flexibility Is relatively easy to obtain. The trick seems to be group the third wTlh the other two. . Those acquainted with the car's performance capabilities assert that It will outrun and outper form any other four cylinder car yet built. In designing the new Jewett coach, which has met with such a cordial reception at the hands of San Francisco motorists during the past two weeks, the factory engineers had in mind three outstanding essentials, namely: Roomy comfort, Bmartness and serviceability. Pointing out 'how completely successful the company was in de veloping these three requirements, Mr. Stough, local dealer says: "Roomy comfort could only be obtained by building the new coach the Bame size as sedan models. It must have ample room for five and, to fill every need of the average family, must also have space in the tonneau for packages. "The rear scat was placed far enough behind the front seats so that the passengers in the rear may stretch comfortably. Even after stretching it Is possible 10 carry packages behind the front seats without interfering with the leg room in the rear seat. "Wide doors permit passengers in the rear seat getting in and out without requiring the riders In the front seat to leave their seats. The width of the doors Is thirty six Inches. "The lines and big windows In the side and rear give to the ex terior the beauty that makes this new model tbe smartest coach on the market. The tipper corners of the back have a ball end. This rounded smoothness fits In with the radiator and hood design. A final touch of artistry Is given to the design by a belt molding, heretofore only employed in the design of the Nation's motet beau tiful cufltom-buttt motor cars. "The finish not only fits In with the beauty of the car, but the full tone Cobalt blue has been proved nearly untarntnhable. The blue Is applied on the panels af ivr they have been primed in 4M) degrees of heat, making a sub stantial ha?e for this fine finlxh. To harmonize with this beautiful exterior the mills of tbe country were searched for a new uphos sterfng material. It was found. A shade that Is between blue and gray was choosen, giving the In terior the rlrhness of a beauti fully furnished room. This new typo upholstery certainly combi nes beauty and long wear. IU wearing qualities are generally known to the public." 0 "Certainly some of the staff of engineer who designed the Over land coupe-sedan must have bwn Westerners," said K. V. Chsne, of Wells and Chaxe Co., local Willys-Knight Overland dealers "Whilo primarily having In mind the creation of an 'all pur pose car,' designed for any loral ity. they have. It seems to me, perfected 'he Ideal low-priced car for this State, where touring and ramping trips am possible prac tically the entire year around and where the climate admits of Hi" comfortable use of a. car almost any Urns, for the Overland cour sed an is a combination family, outing and business car. "The price of the car makes It posnible for anyone to heed 1 h 'call of the 'opn road. and for the man of limited means Its economy of first cost and opera tion makes It the 'open sesame' to Increased happiness for himself and family. "The ease with which the car are converted Into a full-length bed tnlde the car should hav a particular appeal nf the arma sibllity and beauty of the many camping places everywhere thru out the State. "Another appealing feature, of the 'all-purpose cor to the owner who Uses it constantly is the re markable rear seats and uphols tery, which gives him a carrying pace of fifty cubic feet for any purpose." Fine Collection of rtyiO&T ,V; Books on Far East On a high hlU on the very edge of Tokyo stand the world' flneet library 0n the Far East In lan guage other than Chinese, Japa uwe and their kindred tongues. The library building Is fireproof, sound less, severe and scientifically ar ranged, but sadly out uf syuipathj with the unique and marvelous col lection of volumes made by Dr. George Morrison over a period of many years and supplemented now by the purchases of Baron Iwaaakl, who offered ,tbe Institution to stu dents of alb climes. Huron Iwasakl not only placed the library at tbe dltqMisal of those Interested in the Far Kast, building and equipping a horn for It at a cost of 1..VJ0.000 yen, or $750,000, but he endowed the Institution with 2,000,000 yen, the Interest on which Is to maintain tbe library, -assist In tbe promotion of research work on oriental subjects, and purchase ad ditions from time to time. The whole Is placed under the control of a board of trustees. There are books on the subject In more than twenty languages. Petrified Wood Hat Beauty Akin to Gems The petrified national forest, one of the 20 national monument, es tabllahed by Presidential proclama tion. Is the only region of hundreds of places In the Southwest In which slllcltled wood occurs In such ohundunce ns to deserve the name of a pert rifled forest, tt Is located In northern Arizona south of the town of Adaiunna on the Santa Fe railroad and was designated, as national monument In iVM. There are three principal gronps or forests In which trees or blocks of the petrified wood lie scattered aliotit In profusion. Many tree trunks exceed 100 feet In length and cross sections reveal the fact that these trees, which are cednrs, did not grow there, but probably beside an Inland sea, and upon falling be came water-logged on the bottom at this point, During decomposition the cell structure of the wood was entirely replaced by silica derived from sandstone In the surrounding land. The state of mineralization In which much of the wood eilsts al most places It with gems or pre cious stones. Not only are calccdony, opals and agates found, but many trees approach the condition of Jas per and onyx. Coach Properly Defined Now that the coach has become s large factor In motordom, the ques tion Is raised as to what Is meant by the term. The Society of Auto motive Knglneers defines tt : ' "An Inrhmed single-compartment body, similar in general npjtearance to tiie sedun, with two close-coupled cross scuts for four passengers. There Is a Inrge luggage compart ment or space for a trunk at the back of the body. There Is no glass In the rear quarters. The con ventional type has two doors only, the forward seats being divided anil the right-hand seat tipping for ward to give access to the rear cross-seat. Some models have two doors on the right-hand seat, there being two fixed cross-seats." Chance for Experiment It was Iwtween dnnces. They were sitting In dim comer. "You have wonderful eyes," he murmured. . "Yes!" she Inquired expectsntly. "They are like stars," he went on. Her lips brushed his as he mur mured : "They are so bright." Ills hand fumbled In his pocket and lie drew forth a glittering ob ject : "They sre so very bright," he repeated. He thrust, his watch before lier. "See If you crth see the time In the dark."
