GOVERNMENT HITS A
SNAG IN BOOZE TRIAL
(Auncmu-d lt Uwat-d Wir.)
PORTLAND. Ore.. May 13. The
government struck a snag today in
the trial of Oscar Lund and others
charged with rum running, when
Mrs. Kdna M. McDublin, former
special federal prohibition agent,
found difficulty In answering
questions of assistant United
States District Attorney Stearn.3.
She told of meeting Dean
Thomas, one of the defendants.
After she met Thomas, she saw
him nearly every day. But as to
his telling her about bringing In
liquor" and of his statements on
July 1!)4, the night of his arrest
In Warren ton, Ore, she could not
recall. After looking at tho notes
i she had kept she said:
j "Mr. Thomas was sllvhtly drunk
lone niclit and ho madn a state
ment that he had several hundred
cases of liquor coming in Inside of
ten days. He said he would smile
to see the government get him
and they got him "
Asked regarding her friendship
for Thomas, she replied:
"I cannot see that it is neces
sary to dlaruss things that hap
pened since I quit the employment
!of the government.''
I Stearns asked the direct ques
tion whether she and Thomas are
I engaged, but Mrs. McDulin
promptly answered: "No we aro
not.
I'pon continued questioning re
garding the turn the case had
taken, the witness said: "1 think,
lots of him, yes."
