Winchester Store SPEED COP HOLDS COURT ON HIGHWAY ASSESS FINE Mr. and Mrs. Dave Himelhoch, tourists, of Seattle, Wash., stopped in Hose burg for a few hours on their way to points In California on their annual vacation. While here Mr. Himelhoch related his ex periences with the speed cop at brain, which city he passed through shortly before noon. Ac cording to his version he and bis family proceeded, through Drain at a moderate rate of speed, later be ing followed by the officer who stopped the tourists a holf mile out of the city and proceeded to hold court on the highway, impos ing a fine of $15 which the tourist paid. Mr. Himelhoch said the of ficer told him that he, the tourist, might be detained at Drain the balance of the day and rather than to b eao Inconvenienced gave the officer the fine assessed. The ques tion now arises if this method of handling tourists becomes a regu lar practice will It not sooner or later evolve into a regular graft by city speed officers who are over-zealous to enforce -the speed laws of a number of the cities along the highway. The method will certainly lead to high jacking proclivities of a wide degree if the officers are allowed to continue this practice. The tourist held a receipt for the money paid signed by R. Newton, traffic officer, of Drain. But, what he had to say concerning the matter would not look good to print. tock "was hardly dead" before Mrs. William D. "I'm sorry to fl:.d you n-'slra t rd so soon," Chick said as 1 tura o.l at his voice. "Hut perhaps you might as well learn It now at well as later, that you' can't keep such a good looking man as Paul all to yourself. All the other women will be trying to make him forget you. "Now If you had taken a home ly man like me you would not have had that trouble. "Como on and dance and for get your worries." As we moved out into the mid die of the room among the danc ers. Chick bent down with his mouth close to my ear. "I don't know why I came here totvght, Cleo. It Just swms as though I want to make myself miserable. I can't Btay away from you even when you are married. Why could you not have loved me?" I lnnlreri tin into hl fscfi WOn- deringly and answered honestly, j he came "I don't know Chirk." Why didn't I low Chic? He had been Just as devoted to me all the years as had Paul. I think perhaps thut Jf Paul had stayed away from me for a whole year. I might have loved, murried and been called Mrs. Charles Adams. I remembered that night when he first kissed me. I remembor ((1 the thrill Jf his kisses, the night before Paul came home, and decided that It was all bunk that a woman could love only one man all her Ufa through. Something of this must have shone in my face for Chick thight ened hla hold upon me. "Cleo, I can't make myself believe I have really lost you." "You can't most always some times tell Chick." woman. It mattered not If Con nie or any other woman loved him. He was mine and mine alone. After that the who!e reception was a nightmare. I believe I flirted furiously with Chick, at least Paul accused me of It when we got up into our room, but I told him that I was too sleepy to talk. The next day everything seem ed to be "whichwsy". Paul had taken cold and it had settled In a neglected tooth; consequently, he was as ugly as a bear with a sore head. I had an Intuitive feeling also that he attributed tho ache to mo, at least he told me that when Chick and I disappear ed onto the veranda, he had to follow us for fear of the speech of people and, being warm, he had taken cold. I was so disgusted that I didn't answer. I knew that he was hav ing Just as much fun with Con nie and was Just as flattered that Connie had allowed him to pay so much attention to her in spite of his being married to me, as I was at receiving the same atten tions from Chick. I did not realise until I arrived at the door of the dining room the next morning that it was the first of the month. Mr. Arm strong waB growling over the bills and I heard Mrs. Armstrong say, "Well you know, father, the re ception cost us a lot," and he answered, "I can't see why we should have spent so much money Just to make a splurge. If you would come down to earth on in awhile. Mary, and try and be economical, we would have some sort of a show for our old age. You could have done that for 92a with announcement cards If you had not wanted to make a show of It." At that moment I came Into the room and the hostilities ceas ed.
