This was in purt due i to the fact that some of the Ore gon flocks have not beeu sold down to the young breeding uu imals as closely as in former yean. J ' During the liquidation period a considerable percentage of the strictly range district flock, mas ters wvre i o reed to sell their younger animals and in these dis u it id there was perhaps a seven per eent ewe loss. Tho animals were not valuable excepting for their ability to ralso a lamb. . ' The health of the Oregon Uvo stock was never better, outside of some losses in horses, which have been due to botulism caused by the mating of mouldy or botul Inus Infected food. This infec tion is the same that caused the Calitornia olive poUoning. "Tho cattle herds of the state have buen relatively free from disease. The sheep herds are free from sheep scabies for the lirst -time in a number of years. A light lamb loss has beeu experi enced by a few breeders engaged lu winter lambing. "Diseases In nogs have been confined chiefly to pneumonia in young pics and young stock, an imals. As far as we know there has been no home cholera report ed in Oregon since the firdt of the year. The tuberculosis erad ication program is being vigor ously carried on in Oivgon. There was passed at the last session of the legislature, a compulsory u , bvrrulm test law for all that ter ritory in Oregon lying west ot the Ca.scude range. This will insure the compulsory tuberculin telling of yi) per cent of the dairy anim ali ot the state. A Burvey le i ceutly completed by the United i Suites Department of Agriculture dhows that in all excepting six counties of Oregon there is leys than 1 per cent of tuberculoids, which Is a record equalled by but tew stales in the Union." McClay, for 37 years I a resident of Klkton, killed himself : yesterday at his residence near j Talent, according to word received I this morning. Mr. McClay. who was 65 years of age, committed , suicide by shooting himself in the bead with a .22 calibre rifle about ! lo o'clock yesterday morning ac ( cording to word received. He lived j until about 8 p. m. when death oc j curred. The body Is to be taken to Elkion, where Mr. McClay spent I many years of his life, and where I relatives now reside, and the fu i nurel service were held today. Mr. McClay nad been In poor ' health for several years, it was stated, and depression over his con dition is believed to have been the cause for his act. He moved to Talent about IS months ago in the hope of improving his health. Heretofore the city has had 'only two regular officers, extra 'police being employed occasionally, . but because of-the recent robberies land the prevalency of peiiy crime in neighboring cities, Mayor Ilourk authorized an Increase in the de partment In order to provide the best possible protection to the resi dents of Koseburg. Wm. Vaughn, a recent arrival In i Iloseburg. and who has been on the lorco extra for several weeks, has been appointed regularly and is now servicing on tho night shift. I L'nder the present system, I. S. ! Ketch, the chief, Is on duly from j s a. in. until 4 p. m. Vaughn is on I from 4 p. m. until 12 midnight, and , itausch from midnight until X a. m. Mr. Vaughn has had a great dial of experience as a police oflicer ' and deputy sheriff, coming here ' Irom Lebanon where he was em ployed on the police force. Kecently the HoseburK Telegraph Institute, a school teaching tele graphy conducted by E. K. McLen don, Associated Press operator for the Koseburg News-Kuvlow, gained recognition from one of the large commercial telegraph companies, which ottered posltlous to operators graduating from the school. Since that time other letters have been received by Mr. McLcndon from practically all of the leading rail road and commercial companies in the Pacific Northwest, promising to give consideration to all applicants tor positions who graduate from this school with his recommenda tions. Some stated that they were pleased to note that such a school ' had been formed in this territory, I particularly since Instruction Is I given in ail forms of telegraph work which is a departure from the usual Bchool ot this kind, whicn endeavors only to teach the Morse code, ulvine nn atlelilifin tn fnrtiiH and otlice routine, which in the I local school is considered one of the essentials and taught the student-operator. The. field from which positions are offured, Mr. McLendoa says, includes practically all of the l'a citic Coait stales, extending from Texas on the south to Montana on the north. The result of this recognition Mr. McLendon announced today, la to assure the permanency of this en terprise, which was started in Kose burg last October.
