EASTER THOUGHTS According to any prediction that could have been made at the time, when Jesus Christ was condemned by the fan atical Jews of his day, his message and influence on earth were closed. No one could have dreamed that 1900 years thereafter in lands at that time unknown, the religion which, he founded would be accepted as the finest statement of spiritual truth ever made. His marvellous teaching had so much spiritual dynamite in it, it was so charged with power, that it overturned the greatest empire of those days, and be came accepted as the world's best ideal. The results ac complished were so entirely without parallel in history, that it seems impossible to accept Christ as just a man of ordin ary nature. The spark of divine power must have entered in to him to a unique degree. If that is admitted, it is natural .to feel that he had powers and gifts not furnished to any other one. Hence it seems credible that in some form, he appeared in resurrection to his disciples and friends. II there is no immortality for those who prove themselves worthy of it, the whole universe is "built on a sham and our hearts have been tricked by false hopes. If love and justice rule the world, they must provide some further expansion for Che soul and that has been encouraged to trust itself to the divine wisdom. If we believe that God is greater than ourselves, he must have those sentiments of fatherly love that mark man as higher than the beasts, otherwise the creatures that he has made would be superior to himself. And if he is as Jesus declared, a Father, then surely he will, as Jesus said, have many mansions for his followers in some future state, the form and nature of which we can not now . imagine. o For the fourth time since the close of the Wdrld War France has decided to change prime ministers, this time in the thief hope that a cabinet head can be found who can per form a miracle; for it will require the services of a miracle man to lift the burden of debt from a country whose wealth jest citizens, if reports are to be credited, are transferring their heaviest investments to other countries to avoid money conscription an act similar to the one for which they ex coriated their German neighbors, who thus sought to escape their just share of reparations for the war, France, it would appear, is not so much in need of a new ministry as it is of a more patriotic brand of wealth holders. In the end, we presume, history will repeat itself in that the burden of the war's cost will fall heaviest not upon the monied class but upon that clement least able to bear it the element strug gling for daily existence whose pittance of worldly goods is .'never allowed to escape the vigilant eye of the tax collector. o : Ever since 1918 when the country suffered so severely from an influenza epidemic, there has been some nervous ness for fear of a recurrence of that great affliction. Many localities this year have reported grip as epidemic, and in London, 40,000 school children are said to have this disease. It spreads quickly, and if they have it in Europe, there is danger of its spreading to this country. The best way to ! avoid influenza and grip is for people to keep out of doors all ; they can, and admit air to their homes. The human race was ; never made for close seclusion in heated houses. Every time ; the doctors help us avoid one peril, we create another by our own heedlessness of the laws of health. PltMS BY BERT a. Many may argue that the women are already taking on all the public i duties that they can handle in addition to home work. Yet , the women folks do not like the idea that they are merely , domestic creatures whose duty is simply to govern their homes. They demanded the Imllot, hoping to show their nkill at mending and houseeleaning in the government. Many of them are now asking for jury service. Meanwhile '- the men who have always dodged that task, are saying noth ' ing and remarking that they should worry. It is expected that 35.000 young men will attend mili tary training ramps this summer. Are there a number in Hoseburg who will join this big army? If so, they will find it a most interesting experience.
