THE COST OF INDOLENCE " As the observer of modern life looks around, he must be ; impressed by vhe amount of trouble and deterioration caus : ed by indolence. He can find a good many women, who, as ; the result of having indolent husbands, are having to sup ' port themselves and children in part or altogether. Some of these husbands disappear and drop out of sight, whilo ottt- ers are out of a job a good deal of the time. He will find '. workmen dragging about their jobs, performing their task I with little spirit, and increasing the cost of getting our work : done. He will find listless children in the schools, making ; no effort to learn their lessons. Soon they will be out in the world, dawdling through the motions of some job that ! calls for no brains. The world pays a heavy cost each day ; for laziness. What can wake these folks up ? In some cases ; the removal of some physical defect would brace them up. ; Some theorists do not approve of our competitive system, but it is' the one and only thing that can stir these laggaVds from their drowsiness. ; o ' " San Francisco has disposed of the Dorothy Ellingson ; murder case by an 11 to 1 verdict, declaring the 17-year-old "jazz girl" insane. There is no doubt that Dorothy's jazzing ; proclivities had a great deal to do with her state of mind at the time she committed murder. Taking the life of her own ' mother, however, seems too outrageous to condone with an asylum sentence. The least expected would have been con- firiement for life in a penal institution. But, in these mod- ern days of doling out justice there seems to be great stress ' laid on one particular phase of all murder cases the state ' :of mind of the defendant and, judging from the success of this defense in many recent murder trials, there is no doubt : .left in the mind of the ordinary individual that it doesn't rc- quire a great array of evidence to prove a man a genuine "nut" and a woman can be placed in the same category with a less degree of effort. It pays to be a littlo off your balance every now and then if you contemplate "pulling off" something spectacular that might be classed as murder. NE An Englishman who recently advertised for three youths to accompany him on a trip to British Honduras, had 300 applications. He might have got 23,000 if he had tried It in this country. Yet the daily task is full of adventure, as tvell as an expedition to capture wild beasts or contend with a ravages. There is a beast called Sloth which requires quite a battle to conquer. Also it calls for more wit and ingenuity to meet the competitions of the business world than it does to fight the savages. o Oregon now has a "Tammany Hall," though named "In dependence Hall." Its origin began at Portland and, so far as one can discern at this writing, the main intention of the - new organization is to do and to help do things political for " 'the chosen few. Judging from the Hall's temporary officers It they have no novices at the helm to set things off in fine 1 1 shape politically. Already California is beginning to broadcast the fact that a lot of small garden truck placed on the markets in ' "that stato is going to waste. It seems like a case of over ! "production, or a lack of buying on the part of the public. ', .'Probably Californians arc taking on their usual spring diet. I u ; ; An unsigned communication, dealing with the proposed ; ; paving of Second Avenue Soutli, has been received at this of ;;fico. There is no objection to printing the communication - but the author must be known before it will receive any at- 'i tertion. . o ' , Advertisers in the News-Review find an easy route to ; .a successful business career. Woman like, ; Dorothy Kllingson sobbed at the verdict. .she expected more. o The usual Easter headgear will be on display Sunday 'rain or shine.
