Passing; the buck is s regular indoor sport with man people. For instance, when some fellow wants to lambaat another person he writes a communication to his local paper, setting forth his grievances in yery plain language with a formidable display of adjectives to give his thoughts full ex pression. Then, after all has been Baid and done, he seals fiis communication with a fictitious signature, affixes a two cent stamp and shoots it to the editor of the local newspaper, whom, he imagines, is nothing more or less than a novice and ever ready to pull chestnuts from a bed of red hot coals to satisfy the personal whims of a subscriber. Well, we got over this habit a long time ago. But not until we had the privilege of "holding the sack" for a number of energetic people who wanted to get something off their chest at our expense. This paper is always ready and willing to give fullest publicity to matters of public interest. - It will even go further, in some instances. But we cannot, and will not, let any individual, no matter how important his station in public affairs, use the columns of this paper for a gossip' mill. How any person could have the temerity to ask a pa per to stand behind an assertion that they themselves are afraid to sponsor over their own signature is beyond concep tion. But every now and then we are called upon to do this very thing but we don't do it o - - - A fellow townsman walked into our sanctum yesterday and said he was proud of one thing probably two. One was the fact that he had a good set of teeth and the other was the virtue of maintaining a whole lot of pep and ginger at the age of three score years, or thereabouts. There was a time wiven the world was told by a certain noted physician that viten a fellow reached the age of sixty years he should be "KnocKed off." But in this day and age particularly in the r Umpqua Valley it is a common occurrence to witness men : far above the sixty year age limit frolicking with the boys and getting as much kick out of life as the younger set. And .we know of no better or more wholesome way to keep the flower of youth in your bosom than to give way to ttie clean frivolities of the younger set It makes finer men and women and fits them better for home and business life. o Roseburg is making a good, sound conservative growth. Nothing spectacular nothing savoring of a boom just growing bigger and better every day. And the future pre sents many constructive accomplishments that will be born before the year 1925 goes down in history. The fellow who thinks that there is anything in the air that will keep the tity from growing is nursing an Illusion. Once in awhile YOU hear Some nessimistic fpllnur "hlnu-ino- nff" ohnnt uhol will happen when the Natron cut-off is completed. If any thing happens it will redound to the benefit of Roseburg, and we look for that very thing to occur nothing else. f ' During the writer's absence from the city last week, one of our dearest and most esteemed friends answered the call of the Master. With an acquaintanceship lasting over a period of thirty years we have never found a person in whom we could place a trust of confidence, whose friendship we prized more highly, whose every action was directed through Jove and kindness, than that of Mrs. Charlos L. Hadley. We look ed upon this dear old soul as a mother. Her life through all the years we have known her has been an inspiration to ac complish the good, the pure, the more wholesome things ot life that build better and purer womanhood. o Start right in today to save your pennies so that on next , Tuesday, April 7, you will have assembled one Dig, round iron dollar to be given for the benefit of the Children's Farm : Home at Corvnlli. Thp H . ciJ Women's Christian Temperance Union and is one of the most worthy causes to come before the pooplo of Roseburg. When you contribute to the welfare of the children of this state you are doing something worth while for the future generation and the work undertaken is deserving ot your fullest Bupport. Let's go over the top next Tuesday with a bang good and strong. o Portland is taking on the earmarks of a metropolitan city. Her latest achievement to cope with her rivals is the slaying of a woman by an unknown person who demon strated his ability with a healthy chunk of gas pipe. o The greatest css-word puzzle going the rounds tinlay is how to get through the street monuments planted at the corner of Cass and Jackson streets and keep to the right and still be right . .,. o . ' If some people could, or would, work as hard as they talk, it vvould certainly bo a great relief to those who are trying to accomplish something constructive. . o ,' If fashion should declare that women's dresses be made shorter the stocking manufacturers will certainly have to stretch their hosiery, o May 3 to 10 has been set aside as "Music Week." 'llic air will be full of it with the modern radio outfit in perfect working order. o . Some fellows never gt'ttnny where lor the simple reason they never get up to the starting point BY BERT S.
