To th Kill lor: A press dispatch from Winnipeg In the News-Uevlew of March 23d tells of a Christian Sci ence practitioner ot that city hav ing been convicted ot manslaugh ter and sentenced to tour months in prison tor he death ot a twelve-year-old child, who died there of diphtheria last November, but it omits to give any further particu lars. The case fa not one involving moral turpitude or Intentional dis obedience to law, the moral and general standing ot the practitioner not having been Questioned. His conviction rests upon a legal interpretation ot a medical prac tice act ot the province of Mani toba, which Is one of the very few that have not as yet accorded treatment by prayer some form of legal recognition. In this particu lar Instance the parents of the child objected to the use ot anti toxin because of a former experi ence, choosing rather to rely upon upon Christian Science. The case Is therefore another trylng-out of the question ot compulsory medi cine versus medical and religious freedom. THEODORE BURKHART, Christian Science Committee on Publication for Oregon. SUPER METHOD IN REFINING IS USED "Quality which Is found In Gen et al gasoline Is not there through some freak coincidence or mere luck, but was hit upon after sev eral years of experimenting by the General Petroleum Corporation," states R. O. Bowman, manager of the General Petroleum Corporation In Oregon. "It is a direct result of what we consider to be a super method ot refining, which we have used since our product was first placed on the market." Mr. Bowman points out that the primary operation in the refining ot crude oil is one of distillation. 'Pe troleum is a combination or mix ture of what are chemically known as hydrocarbons, all having ditter ent boiling points and gravities. In determining the specific gravity ot an oil. Its weight is compared with an equal volume ot pure water and the nigher the Baume gravity ot the oil, the lower will be its boil ing point. "By the method used by the Gen eral Petroleum Corporation, known as the Trumble Patent Continuous Process, crude oil Is pumped In a steady stream through a aeries of pipe retorts set in a bricked fur nace, where the oil is heated to the desired temperature from 460 to 6u0 degrees Fahrenheit, depend ing upon the type of crude oil and the number of products to be made. From the retort this heated oil Is flowed Into a large cylinder set on end, where the vapors sep arated by the heating pass off through a series of condensers ted by a constant supply of cooling water. Tbe unevaporated oil tail ing to the bottom ot the cylinder is run Into tanks and is known as 'residuum' or fuel oiL In the first condensers, where the vapors are hottest, the heav iest portions of the vapors con dense back Into liquid form and are run off as a heavy distillate called dlessel oil, or furnace oiL Tbe next condensers produce the next heivlest distillate called stove oil and kero distillates. This may be re-distilled and treated to pro duce kerosene. 'The final condensers In which the vapors are coolest and there fore the lightest are supplied with the largest amount ot cooling wa ter, and in these the gasoline is re condensed. The excellence of the gasoline depends upon the care with which the temperatures are maintained In the various condens ers and the completeness with i which condensation is carried out. "The first process of refining is called 'topping," and a re-distiiiing or treating Is usually necessary to make it marketable. The treat ment frequently used on gasoline after it has been made to the de sired specifications. Is tbe acid and alkaliue method. By this use, the Introduction of acid into the oil raises Its temperature consider ably and baa a tendency to vapor ize oft some of tbe lighter gases, and the agitation which is neces sary further increases this loss. "in making General gasoline, however, we use what is known as the 'doctor solution' method, and by this there is no change In the temperature of thu gasoline. The (agltatlou . necessary is done in 'tight vessels kept cool so that Ihra I. n .nll.,.ktn I ... .,,., important part of tho gasoline which is so necessary for the easy starting of motors." OOI XTV IKkSPlTAI, TO HB Ol'KNKD ABOUT APRIL 1, The new county hospital at the county home will be ready for oc cupancy about the first ot April, according to Dr. Belt, the county physician.
