MARCH 6, 1925. .THE RECEPTIVE MOOD The business man who desires to enlarge his sales lias to study the problem of hitting his "prospects" while they are in a receptive mood. A traveling .salesman does not walk up to some merchant who in the midst of a rush period is trying to do about three hours work in one hour. He knows if he tackled him then, ,he would Ket no attention. Jle Jiangs around the place until he finds the business man's rush hour has passed. When the prospect is relatively at leisure, lie approaches him, and his chance.? for a favorable hearing are increased 1000 per cent. Newspaper advertising likewise doe3 its work of solicitation under favorable conditions. Jt approaches people wlien they are in a mood to listen to sales talk. People sit down to read newspapers at times when their attention can be attracted. They are not working or indulging in some game which takes up their mind, but have set down to read. their newspaper because they have time to give to anything that interests them. They can be attracted toward any proposition that promotes their self interest, as well as to any news article that concern's them less erson ally. If a salesman calls at the door to interest them in some article, the chances are about 10 to 1 that they will be to busy doing something else that they will, not listen to him, even if he has a good proposition, Kut at that particular moment when they sit down to read that newspaper, their minds are free from care and they can be approached. The people who advertise in newspapers attract people's interest at the most favorabltpsychological moment of any period in the 21 hours, and the result is seen in the great fortunes that have been built up through approaching people by news paper publicity.
