Belief that the Chicago National league baseball club will place higher in 1925 than it did last year was ex pressed here by William Killefer, Cub manager, in commenting -on the outlook for the ensuing season. "It is yet too early in the year to predict the pennant chances ot the club," Killefer declared, ad ding, however, that he was confi dent the Cubs would tinlsh "near the top." "A team that will be many per cent stronger than that of last sea son, augmented by more hitting strength, will describe fully the 1925 squad," he said. "All positions, with the excep tion ot shortstop which was weak ened by the loss of "Rabbit ' Mar anville who broke his ankle recent ly in an exhibition contest, have I bee n strengthened considerably. I "No greater blow can be Inflict ed upon a club than the loss of its star shortstop. Tbe injury to War ! anville was a serious blow to the Chicago club, but I bold great 1 hopes for Clark Pittinger, acquired from the Salt Lake club of the Pa ! cif ic coast baseball league to fill j the berth. His work has lmprea 'sed me greatly. "The pitching staff has shown great Improvement over last year. With Grover Alexander, Tony Kaufman, Vic Keen, Cooper, Chas. Root, the latter obtained recently from the Los Angeles coast league club and several other ntoundsuien who have shown great promise, the Cub's hurling staff will be strong."
