The Pacific Homestead 183 South Commercial Salem, Oregon SENATE RENEWS WRANGLE OVER WARREN'S NAME (Continued from page 1.1 tlons. : "About that time the Americaa Sugar Refining company, or per- , sons connected with the corpora tion, began buying stock In some or all of these Michigan corpora-! tlons. Mr. Warren acted as an at-1 torney for these buyers, passing ' upon the validity of Btocks being purchased. "A part, and I think It may fair- j ly be said, a large nart of the stock so purchased, was issued or I transferred to Warren and hi lu turn endorsed It in blank lor di- livery to the purchasers." "This operation continued for about four years until the Amer ican Sugar Refining Company or persons connected with that com pany, notahly II. o. Haventeyer, owned about 37 percent of the stock of these Michigan compa nies. Their management, how ever, continued to be luefrectlve and the results unprofitable. In the meantime Mr. Warren had acquired In his own right a very considerable interest In the stock in some of these Michigan cor porations. "All this resulted in a move ment for the consolidation of six Michigan companies which cul minated In 1906 in the organisa tion of the Michigan Sugar com pany, Mr, Warren wua not a member of this Joint company. "When the valuation was com pleted all the properties of these companies were transferred to the Michigan Sugar company and U is not suggested that there was any unfairness in these valuations that any stockholders complained of the transaction." "This stock, as I understand it, was issued in the name of Mr. Warren and immediately endors ed by him in blank and delivered to the proper office of the Michi gan Sugar company for transfer and delivery to the American Su- jgar refining company or the in- uivmuais wno owned it. Then and there Mr. Warren's relajion to the American Sugar Refining company or to the eastern stock holders of the Mirhigsn Sugar company terminated and hd was never employed by the American Sugar Refining company or by any one who was operating for it or In Its interest, except for ser vice rendered In the state of Michigan looking to the better ment of the sugar situation in Michigan". , With reorganization completed by approval of the standing com mittee slates, the senate had a clear road today for further con sideration of . the nomination of Warren, . Approval of the committee line ups by which the La Follette in surgents are demoted from their previous committee ranking, was voted by the senate late yesterday 64 to 11 after five hour'a debate. President Coolldge fully supports the action of senate republicans in replacing insurgents In Important committee places with regulars and considers that the question at issue is one of making it possible for his party to govern the coun try. The whole question as the pres ident sees It, was whether con gress wss to be organized in such a fashion that the republican par ty could carry out its campaign pledges. The chairmanship of the Import ant committees and a majority on each one he believes should go au tomatically to members of the dominant party and there should be no objection to the exclusion of others from these responsibilities. Authority and funds for the sen ate elections committee to begin Investigations this summer of the sontests Involving the seats of Senators Bfookhart, lowar; Schall, Minnesota, and Brat ton. New Mex ico, were voted today by the sen ate. Notice waa given today in the senate by Senator Harris, demo crat. Georgia, that he would move cto discharge the foreign relations committee from further considera tion of the world court. To Resume War Tax Probe Resumption next Monday of Its inquiry into tax settlements was determined upon today by the tspeclal senate Investigation com mittee. Chairman Couzens said the com mittee's deslclon was made with out reference to his charge yester day In the senate that the treasury was seeking to "discipline" him by reopening his 1919 return. "That matter was not discuss-1 ed," he said. "Our staff has been ! at work preparing cases and will be ready to present them begin- j njng Monday. In April the staff will prepare further cases for presentation In May before the hearings finally are brought to an end on June 1 by senate order." Since the senate will not be in session durlnjr the remainder of the hearings, the testimony given in secret will not become available to the public until the new con gress, assembles. Teeth For Prohl Law Enactment of legislation by the next congress to provide heavier penaltii-s for violators of the pro bitlon laws wss recommended to day by a sub-committee of the house alcoholic liquors committee. President Coolltlge, In filling vacant federal Judgeships, will of fer some appointments to demo crats. ' The president does not consider the selection of Judges a psrtlsan question, although as a rule he will continue to appoint repub licans. No Judicial nominations will be sent to the sen-te, however, , until the nomination of Chrles : H. Wsrren of Michigan as Attor ney-General is confirmed and the -president has an opportunity to consult with him. Washington baseball officials today put In their bid to have PrVsident Coolldge to open the season here April 21. by throw ing out the first ball In the gsme with the New York Yankees.
