ROSEBURG, OREGON, WASHINGTON'S The recurrence of the birthday of the Father of our country succeeds each year in attracting a great amount ot attention. The profound impression made by his very re markable character is still very vivid. There is a certain grandeur in the personality of this great patriot that rises above ordinary levels. It is claimed that Washington was not as politically skillful as other leaders of his time, men like Jefferson and Hamilton for instance. Uut he had char acteristics that are almost uniciue. One might speak long of his marvelous military skill and his superb courage and reso lution. Another great characteristic was his extremely high and conscientious sense of duty. It was significant ot his serious turn of mind that at the age of 13, when most youngsters of today think of kicking up their heels and hav ing a high old time, George was writing out a schedule ol 110 maxims of civility and good behavior. All through his life he was ever following this star of ideal conduct. This high sense of obligation led him to take a quite unique po litical position when he became president. Where the other great leaders divided into parties and were much influenced by the appeals of prejudice and passion, Washington never aligned himself with any political organization. That might not be considered a good method for our times, but he iol lowed this course because he feared the results of the bitter conflict that was springing up among American statesmen. His broad and generous mind could see good in all parties, He strove to bring the conflicting factions together, and make each see the merit in the other point of view. We need more of Washington's conscience and breadth of view in our business and political conduct of today. It is often remarked that when men and women and boys and girls get on the dance floor, they seem to think on ly of their own selfish pleasure. The nice dancers ana pretty and best dressed girls are said to get the invitations, while the learners and plain ones are neglected. The Knglish Prince of Wales showed how to do those things better the other day, at a dance in Lancashire, when he picked out a blind girl and darned with her through a whole figure and three encores. As a girl with such a handicap was probably less in demand as a dancer, he showed a spirit which our chappies might well imitate as well as his clothing styles. . o A woman was complaining the other day about the in ferior materials that one frequently gets nowadays in order ing supplies or making purchases. She felt that a great deal nf cheap stuff had been worked off since the war, when many producers learned the art of using substitutes and had continued to work them in. With prices at their present lev ,'cl, and the public often refusing to pay the price necessary for thoroughly good goods, it is natural that a good deal of cheap stuff should be demanded. Which shows that it pays to buy goods of the substantial stores of lioseburg where they will always tell you what goods are made of. o A lady who had been unable to obtain a program at an entertainment tne oiner any, oueiea a nuy jv a-nm n n--would secure one for her. He did not show the least inter est in tiic offer. The present generation of kids does not re gard a dime highly, though that coin once seemed large and important. The other side of the picture was shown when a boy of four to five years of age was heard expressing some satisfaction over the fact that he had been given $5.00 to send. While that kid may be the exception, his ideas and demands are the product of ah age that is somewhat lavish with children. ZiAJll -ii.. o Far belter for the legislature to remain in session for a few days longer rather than try to put over a week's pogram in twenty-four hours. Sane and conservative action al the eleventh hour is belter than a day's catastrophe. Afttr a follow wears latlios' appaivl for one evening he is more than ever eonvinced that it s all in the "makeup" no matter how well the deception that drives many a man to the tall timber. o Tnited States senators and congressmen have passed a bill to inciv.ise their salaries from IfT.MH) to if 10,000 a year. This is a good opportunity lor President Coohde to s uik f a wicked axe. o February being the shortest niiiuth in the year puts it on a par, financially, with the average individual during the other eleven months. o 'I'his is spring time in uglas county. Nice, warm, juicy rains every now and then w ith a spot of .sunshine. Portland now has an estimated population of over : 000 people including the bootleggers. T tUllllUL I. Two s the Tus - NKW YOKK. A "mule skinner" was a fellow who, in ye olden daye, drove a string of these animals throughout the mountain trails and rugged roads of undeveloped Ore-1 gon. This is a small beginning Tor a euccessful career. But you can never tell by looking at a toad how far he ia going to jump, and this old adage well applies to many now prominent men who started life In a very common place man ner. And, we'll bet when George got hie lungs limbered up those old mules perked their ears, stuck their tails in the air and were rarln to go over the top for their master. We always wondered where George received his voice culture which gave him such power of delivery, but the mule story tells the secret. Now, Geotge Is going to leave our midst. Another rung on the ladder of suc cess has been added to his career of notable achievements in public I, fa Prnm 'miila ikinnr" to Unit. cd State district attorney is no mall jump.
