And we wouldn't know a thing about the lad's good deeds if the telling were left to him. At the Scout's Anniversary Week time February 8 1 1th, we like to turn the spotlight on these knights in khaki and rejoice in their record of efficient kindness, service and good citizenship. Records compiled at the National Scout office show that since the beginning of the Movement, over 1,000 awards for life-saving have been issued. Burning buildings, icy lakes, whirling waters, were fre quently the scenes of these brave rescues exploits which grimly tested the skill, presence df mind, and courage of these youthful heroes. Civic service totalling thousands of hours is the un varying record of every Scout council. Honolulu alone lists for the past year 21,000 hours of service contributed in re sponse to 21 different calls for assistance from local insti tutions and organizations. . The acres of timber land saved from ravages of forest flames by the Scouts can never be estimated. Tree planting conservation of natural resources, pres ervation of bird life by building bird houses and replenish ing bird sanctuaries with food all winter long, are some oth er activities of the Scouts. ' Serving on school traffic children cross streets safely, installing radio sets lor me blind, chopping wood, for old people, keeping city hydrants clear of snow and ice, are just a lew ol tne inousanus m other ways these lads have been rendering service. As to progress in Scouting activities, records for 1921 show that 9,031 boys have won a merit badge for fireman ship, 9,603 for public health and 9,426 for personal health. Thousands of other badges have been won for the remain ing 67 subjects in the curriculum. Scouting is doing well its wonderful job for the future citizenship and security of our country. May the influence of this sterling movement soon reach the lives of the 8,000, 000 boys of Scout age not yet within the ranks. o The prophets who predicted the end of the world Feb - vuary 6, may have concluded by this time that a planet that was apparently some millions of years in getting ready for its present condition is not likely to "bust up" without giv ing warning. The world will keep revolving for ages after our present civilization is so far back in history that it is looked at as a condition of barbarism. The mind draws back in awe from the contemplation of these long periods of time. The old hymns that described man as a "worm" were right from one point of view. And yet when man .could foretell the recent eclipse of the sun down to five sec onds, he is to be considered "quite a bird" as the boys would ;Pay. o - Some one presented President Coolidge with a photo 'graph of the academy class at Ludlow, Vermont, w here he graduated in 1H90, and he smiled at the odd dress those young folks woro at that period. Most middle aged people have photographs of somewhere around the same date, and both young men and women look very stiff and uncomfort able in the typical dress of those periods. The fact that a certain style is fashionable reconciles people to its absurd ities. People with sincere and pleasant faces look well in al most any kind of a rig. When the old fashions come around again, the experts are surprised to sec how becoming they were. o The loss of property by fire in 192:! was ?.":.",000,00n, more than ever before, and it is stated that the greatest single cause was the discarded matches and tobacco of careless smokers. The men will not give up their smoking habit, but it is up to any man who throws away a match or ignited tobacco to make sure that he is puting the same in a harmless place. The man who puts this stuff in a waste basket full of inflammable relue should be called upon to read a paper on -ft re prevention at the next community meet 1ET OFFICERS ELECTED Thc !ion-hu:i; Rod and Gun club In 'd i( H'uiitl ehcttoti I ant hluht, laknikt ii aFo a number of iimt 1 rx ef but h.h r lalive to the fu ture ork of the organization.
