Riggs, a resident of the Green Valley district, west of Oak land, was fitHtamly killed lute yes terday afternoon, w hen he was struck by a falling tree. "Jtiggs Tiad been at Oakland, and upon his re turn went to a neighboring farm where men were engaged n clear ing trees' and brush. He was standing about 20 fet from a tree which was being cut when the trunk broke off and kicked back over the stump. Riggs was standing under anoth er large tree, and tho tree just fel- l d tore out the top of the one under which IUkks had taken retuge. Tho wooiicutterri seeing the man's danger yelled at him, and he, either misunderstanding their calls, or becoming confuted, ran directly Under the lulling tree, the trunk of which struck him upon the head, crushing his skull and killing him instantly. His head was driven into Hit! ground, and It required several minutes to release the body. Coroner Hitter was called and made a thorough investigation of the accident, but as the facts were evident no inquest was deemed necessary. Mr. ltiggs came to Douglas coun- j ty about thirteen years ago from i Spokane. He settled in Green Val I ley w here he engaged jn farming j until the time ol his death. He is (survived by a widow, two sons, Kichard a;idHurold, and one daugh ter, Kuth, all ol w hom are at home.
