Applications of land plaster In March increases the growth of Oreiion vetch, says tbe riperliaent station. At the rata of 76 pounds an acre It will help out the weak stands of fall and spring planted vetch which were damaged by the cold weather last vinter. When fertilisers are applied to the normal stand there will be an increase in growth but not so no ticable as when put on tbe weak or thinner etauds. A chick costing a little. more than the average may lay a doiuu or two more eggs as a pullet, ac cording to Professor A. U. Luun, of the Oregon station. One or two eggs In the fall will more than pay this additional cost ot the chick. Hee keepers are urged to see that the entrance to the hives are open, so that bees may come out on sunny days, says the Oregon experiment station. lly Uftin& the back end of the hive the bee keeper is enabled to determine by the weight -the amount of stores the bees have. The spring rush may be lessened by getting equip ment reudy for use now. Application of commercial fer tilizer to be most efficient on thlti grain stands should be made hi the early part of March, says tha experiment station. A light ap plication of nitrate of soda or sul fate of ammonia 50 tt 7a pounds an acre stimulates atooling of thin stands ot small grains fh western Oregon. Many poor hatches are caused I by neglecting to lest Incubator thermometers each season, say poultry authorities at the Oregon station. Thermometers may be tested by pluclng the bulbs in wa ter heated to lt3 degrees, using a clinical or doctor's thermometer to check with. Any difference which may appear can then be taken into account lh reading. Brown rot mummies, dead twigs and spurs, and mildewed twis should be pruned and removed from orchards, as they lessen the sources of future spring infection, and supplement the regular spruy program, advises the Oregon ex periment statiuu. These should be burned, for iu many cases it not burned, the disease spores are formed Just the same, causing much trouble later on. The spring application of bor deaux Is nut satisfactory fur the clean up of anthracnose in a bad ly affected Oregon orchard. A new spray program by the ex periment station advises bor deaux mixture added to the July codling moth spray in such cases. Fall spru ing Is no longer recom mended Tor this disease because of weather conditions at that time of the year, which favor In fection and Interfere with spiay fng. : Size and shape of hatching eggs are characteristics tho Ore gon poultryman cannot afford to ignore, says the experiment sta tion. Texture of shell, shape, color, and size of eg may be transmitted through tho off spring. Mould on sprouting oats may be prevented by providing plenty of ventilation and sufficient heat to hasten growth, according to ex periments at the Oregon station.
