The Survey points out that among primitive groups of people, education is someUiing provided only for children. Grown-up people are not supposed to need any further education. This authority goes on to show that progressive nations should have a higher stand ard, and should proAnote the idea that education should nev er stop. In Athens, for instance, capital of ancient Greece, there were no schools for children worthy of the name, but people of all ages had an eager thirst for knowledge. The existence of this desire for wisdom gave the masses of the people a power for achievement, so that many authorities consider ancient Greece about the most remarkable jiation that ever existed. In our times we feel the , need of good training for children, but our ideas are wrong if we think that educa tion stops when these youngsters leave school. The schools oujjit to give them an eager desire for greater wisdom. The mere facts and information that they have acquired will to a large extent be forgotten. But if they have the learning spirit, if they have actpjired habits of thorough study, if they feel the desire to regulate their thought and conduct and labor by the highest possible standards, they will be well prepared for later activities. Our communities must therefore promote good plans for adult education through public libraries, reading rooms, lecture courses, discussion groups, etc. One of the great problems of our time is how to interest the masses of the people in the pur suit of useful knowledge. The newspapers are certainly do ing their share to help by printing more informative mat ter than ever before. picmn's Br & BATES COOO EVENING FOLKS Hi ho hum Omigosh But wt don't know WhaMm-tter With us unlets , Mtbbs it's th Spring fever 'Cause golly When the sun Peeped out today We didn't feel A dern bit Like workin' ' JHo ho hum. J I There la decided difference be-. 'tween criticising the appointments I of A certain governor, and remov-f ing the appointive power from all ' governora. I There will probably be little crit icism of the legislature's action re garding the Fort or Fortland, for that involves a local, rather than a state problem. But when it comes to state af fairs, like the fish and game com j mission and the penitentiary, the : legislature had better slip into low. I The governor of Oregon should ' be responsible for the administra tion of state affairs. Depriving a governor of the appointive power because his appointments are poor, ; would be like scrapping an automo , bile because of a poor mechanician. ;Far better sense to change the mechanician than to scrap the ma chine. Governor Pierce will be Oregon's chief executive for two more years. Give him. a chance to carry out his program. Let him be held personal ly responsible for that program. If he continues a course, which the legislature regards as detri mental to the best interests of the Name and address on file.
