UMDeR the Coop ST. LOUIS, Jan. 31. With no outstanding trades made by manager llranch Rickey to strengthen the hurling staff, the St. Louis Cardinals appear to be little stronger for this year's na tional league drive than In 1S24 when they finished sixth. The hitting of the team last season was good and the field ing fair. The pitching generally was considered the weak link, al though several hurling prospects are to receive trytouts, besides which Duster Mails, veteran southpaw, has been obtained from Oakland, the outlook as a whole is uncertain in this re spect. Of the veteran twirling talent, Dickernian and Sothern pitched fairly good bull last season. The others who will be back are Hai nes, Sherdel. Utuart and Dyer. Mike Gonzales, the Cuban, Is expected to do the bulk of the catching this year. Others are Niebergall and demons, with the team last season. 1 nree others trom the minors will be given tryouts. Tho team s main strength lies in the infield with liotlomley at first, Hornsby at second and Cooney at shortstop considered us fixtures. Hornsby batted .413 last Beason, the highest mark in modern big league his tory. Third base Is an open quest ion with Friegau, Lester Hell and Toporccr, as leading candidates. Another problem for Itlckey to solve is the outfield. The Cards have enough outfielders for two or three teams. Wades, jjout hit, Hafey, Holm, Mueller, My ers, Shinners and Jack fimilh comprise the candidates. Smith is considered the pick ot the lock and almost certain to start in right, with Blades lu left. Center field Is uncertain, especially since Rickey muy use Holm behind the bat. The Cardinals will train at Stockton, Calif., where tliey will gather on or ubout February 22.
