J j JUT0I11IEV According to a story which ap peared In yesterday's Oregon Jour nal, a movement la on foot at the state legislature to secure endorse ment for some other candidate for the office of U. 8. district attorney for Oregon besides (Jenr?" Neuner and Robert Kuykendull. The Jour nal story reads as follows: Journal llureau, Salem, Jan. 23. Federal politics and federal pa tronage entered the halls of the state legislature toduy when a pe tition apiieurrd in the senate, which is being numerously signed, recommending to Senator McNary and Stanfield, the selection of Louis K. lleun of I,ane county as a compromise candidate for the ap pointment as I'nlled Stales attor ney for Oregon. The petition also Is to bo circulated in the house, and when all available signatures by senators and representatives have b en obtained, will be sent on to the senatorial delegation In Wash ington. It might be explained, In connec tion with the Incident, that Ilean, although he has been at Salem the last day or so, was not the sponsor for the petition, but that It was I started In his behalf by his old friends and legislative colleagues. From what may be gathered here, there is a derinile deadlock be tween McNary and Stanfield over the selection of a successor to Judge Coke as existed on the day of Coke's resignation months ago. :Mciary anu htanm-M, It Is under B stood, proceeding on a program of elimination at their first confer ence over the district attorneyKhip, agreed to set aside both George Neuner and Kobort Kuykendull from further consideration. Follow ing that agreement tho senator took up for discussion various oth- them that of fiean. It developed, it is understood that McNary was op- iuf-u tu nt'un uecauso or pasi poli tical activities Just as he waa op;ios ed to Kuykendull because of his recent political activity as a candi date for attorney general against Van Winkle. As time passed and the deadlock continued unbroken, the story came back that McNary has ben bring ing Neuner back Into the discus sion as a possible appointee, al though tho one chief "dark horse" suggestion as a compromise made by McNary to Stanfield was Charles Hardy of Kugene. In the still darker background, however, Is the candidacy of Tom T. llennett of MHrshfield, agalmtt whoso appointment neither of the senators seem to have marked op position. The Oregonlan states that the appointment has been .held up because of the absence of Sena tor Stanfield, who lias been away from Washington for the last VA weeks Ha la Mnpplpil In return at any time, however. nnil!'rl Position of the British Isles the mnller nf fh niuuilnlmenl will be immediately taken up at at mat nine. The largest early crowds were on upper Riverside Drive and In Van Cortlnndt and IJronx parks, which were considered un usually good vantage points.
