he's gone on to the Coast and may

"Really r Cynthia's face fell. How
would she get along without Jim all
that time? "In that case, he's prob

Louella looked at her doubloualy.
"Well, perhaps, though It would
hardly seem likely to me," she re
plied. cyntmas face flushed, hut she
saw nothing. Why hadn't Jim
written her as promptly aa he had
written his mother!" For a moment
she was very nnfjry. Then another
thought came probably he had
planned to send hor a telegram that
night, or perhaps he'd call her on
tne long distance. "I must hurry
home," aho exclntmed, when she
thought of thnt. "I'm sure Jim will

"If he does he's more extravagant

During the drivo home Louella
was very quiet; it was a dlsapprov

effort to break it. Why should her
husband's people be so hostile, she
asked herself. It seemed impossible
to please them. Well, she'd stop
trying, If they continued to be so
disagreeable.
Stanley escorted her up to thft
stops to her front door, and waited
there with her until It was opened.
"Guess you and I got in wrong
tonight," he confided gloomily.
"Louella gave me the deuce when I
saw her for a few moments alone,
and she'll go on with It when we'

all I could do to tear your attention

"You'd better not have anything
to do with me If you want to keep
peace In the' family; everything 1

was tired and unhappy, wretched at
the prospect of having J Ira away for
