STATE HOI'SE. Snlem, Ore.,
Jan. 12. One of the enrly fights
of the session will be over (inv
entor Pierce's veto of the Dalv in
heritance tax bill of the last "ses
sion. The estate of Dr. Bernard Daly
of Lake County, amounting to
about $1,000,000 was left as a
charity to send young men and
women of Lake county to the in
stitutions of higher learning In
Oregon. The Inheritance tax on
the estate amounted to about $200,
000. Senator Upton last session
Introduced a bill for the remission
of the tax on grounds that the es
tate was a charity fund.
After the session, the governor
vetoed the bill. It Is said there is
a possibility that a new bill will
be Inlroduced providing that about
25 percent of the $200 000 be plac
ed III the state Irreducible school
fund and that the remainder be re
milted. Knactment of this bill
would in effect sustain the veto of
the governor.
