ORE60N, SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1925. .WASHINGTON SETTING The proposal that haa been advanced barring those sena tors and representative who are known booze imbibers from the national legslative bodies, is meeting with almost universal favor from advocates of dry America. The eighteenth amend ment was placed upon the statute books of these United States after passage and ratification by the states. Senators and repre sentatives accept seats in their respective houses pn taking the oath to sustain the constitution of the United States. The eighteenth amendment is as much part of the constitution as any other amendment to that document, and when lawmakers in the upper and lower house of congress flagrantly violate the spirit and letter of the constitution they jmmediatly become un desirable ciizens, and must be classed with all others who may Violate some specific amendment or section of the law they are law violators of the worst sort, and dangerous to the com mon good and prosperity cf the nation. Because of their great er prestige as members "of the senate or house of representa tives these men -who connive with turn runners and bootleggers to prostitute the provisions of the .eighteenth amendment are particularly dangerous. They trust in their exalted positions to escape the meshes of the law, and resort to any practice to evade responsibility for their lawlessness. Such men are not good citi zens. Their very presence in the national congress is conducive to lawlessness by leaser lights in the great body of American citizenship, and the constitution is made, so far as it is in their power and influenoe to do it, a "mere scrap of paper." The present situation is not one to be treated lightly, because the im ' pression being made upon the minds of rising generations, soon to come upon the boards in the great drama of better govern ment, must be recognized. Allowed to continue, the very moral fiber of the nation will be undermined. The law-loving, loyal citizenry of these United States must meet this attempt to break down the eighteenth amendment in all the power and majesty of their united strength. Wine bibblers, rum runners and bootleg ger's friends now occupying seats in the senate or house should be dealt with drastically. Since they have, and are, daily violat ing their oath in buying and drinking intoxicants, they ought to be impeached. More than that, they should be dragged into the courts and after conviction given the limit of the law given the same treatment that is accorded to the mountaineer moonshiner caught with the goods. This nation-wide whiskey ring can be broken up, and a good place to Many people have been raising cries of alarm about the alleged low standards of the younger generation. Another way of reaching them is suggested by the popular play called "The Best People." In that play are depicted two young people of a wealthy family. The young man was dissipated and the girl opinionated and headstrong. Instead of railing at these faults, the play makes their presumptuous ways ridiculous. It suggests that two other young folks of obscure families with whom they respectively fall in love, and whose social standing would be considered much lower, are yet far superior to them in real worth. More can be done to cure faults by laughing at them than by lecturing them. 0 A friend has been watching a certain newsboy, and he re ports that this little fellow is habitually late on his rounds. The trouble seems to be that he is so keenly interested in the news, that he stops by the way to read his papers. That boy may yet be successful, as he evidently has an alert mind. Just at pres ent he haa the wrong idea. He is a type of many people who are so keenly interested in what is going on, that they can't con centrate on their work. Thus it happens that many people who are intelligent, are not successful. The school site committee held another meeting last even ing, and, judging from the oratory displayed, is getting "worm ed up to the subject." It's no small job to please half the peo ple, let alone all of them. If some generous hearted individual would only come forward and offer a good plot of ground to the school district for nothing it would mnke it easy sliding for the committee and a sigh of telief would be uttered by all concerned. A site by a dam but not a mill by a dam site is just about as conflicting as a school site with or without an athletic site at this particular lime. 8UTHERLIN PLANS TO REFUND BOND ISSUE At tho regular meeting of (he city council Monday night, the mut ter of a refunding bond Issue to take care of the bonds now due on the east Central Avenue paving was taken ui, and after aome dis cussion or the mater a contract was entered inlo between the city and the Starkey A Ilubbs, Inc., of Portland, whereby the latter agreed to take the Issue at ( per cent, aays the Kutherlln Sun.
