The Douglas National Bank building is to be remodeled, in fact, almost rebuilt, at an enormous expense, giving one of the best quipped and most beautiful bank buildings on the Pacific coast. Plans are being made for a big garage near the auto camp grounds. The Roseburg News-Review is plan ning on the construction of a building to house its newspaper and job printing plant, and expects to start work early in the spring. These are only a few of the building projects now in view, and 1 925 is expected to far surpass all previous years. One thing can be pointed to with pride, by Roseburg, and that is the steady advancement of its building. A survey of the past five years indicates a steady, irresistable, growth, each year slightly ahead of the last except where one major project has 1 brought a sudden jump. But in all, considering business and residential building, "the growth has been very satisfactory, as shown by the following table, giving the monthly and yearly per mit records: 1920 1924 1923 1922 1921 January 13,525 1,025 11,550 5.207 Feb : 17,650 22,370 14,700 5,000 March 19,550 58,475 29,500 13,000 April 38.260 40,835 15,900 7.650 May 1 1.575 12.725 158,710 16,100 June 28,015 6,525 21,750 12,000 July 28,340 - 12,990 17.300 6,400 August 19.025 38,625 10,575 8.000 Sept 33,826 18,855 14,150 10,275 October .... 29,060 19,740 12,160 15,635 November 10,950 13.840 6.115 15,635 December.. 68,000 33,705' 2,450 13.455 Total 317.776 279.710 318,860 126.380 117,610 The monthly record for the year 1924, showing the nature of construction, and the money expended for different types of building, is shown in the following table: Business Garages Alterations Month county health unit, has completed the report uf the organization cov ering: the period from ten. i, 1921, to Dec. 31, 1924. This report whleh Is made to the Stale Hoard of lleallh, covers all activities of the unit and shows the work that has been accomplished. The com pleto report is as follows: Douglas County Health Department Annual Report This department was organized February 1, 1921, with one full time health officer, two nurses, and one office assistant, a stenograph ep. Little time was lost In organiza tion and survey as the unit was confronted with numerous epldem ics of scarlet fever, measles, and illptherla throughout the county. Id Raining control of the epidemics a survey was made for future needs. Douglas county embraces nearly five thousand souaro mlleB of tern tory, extending from the Pacific ocean to the crest of the Cascade mountains and about one hundred miles In length practically the size of the whole state of Connecticut. There are ono hundred and forty two school districts in the county. It is a two or three days' journey from Hoseburg to some of these districts on account of the roads. in some Instances it is necessary lo go out of the county and come back In again. ContagloiiB diseases were widely scattered and several months were required to gain control. The num ber of contagious diseases reported during the first five months were 29. and 68 the last five months. The physical examination or school children has so far progress ed that 90 per cent of the children have been examined. Goitre is not present In Douglas county to the extent found In tile Willamette val ley, but several well defined goitre belts were discovered and louine tablets given ill the schools. '1 he stimulating effect of physical ex amlnation aroused the Interest of parents and many children were taken to their family physician or dentist for examination or correc tion.
