I The LIBERTY THEATRIC !
OMAHA, Nebr., Oct. 21. Sen
ator Robert M. I-a Foliette. inde
pendent presidential candidate In
an address here last iiiht re
newed his demand for repeal of
the transportation act of 1120, de
clared there will be no reduced
freight rates until this is done.
And charged that the railroad in
terests are engaged actively "in
a desperate effort" to defeat him
and elect either Cooltdgu or Ia
vis, utnl Insisted that he did not
propose, If elected, to undertake
"any ill considered experiments in
public ownership of railroads or
along any other line."
I'eclaring that counties laws
ha-ve been passed to deal with
the proven and admitted evils of
transportation system but even
the best of them have not gone
to the root of the trouble, Mr.
La Foliette contended that the on
ly way to take the railroad ques
tion out of politics is to settle it
right.
"Every half way measure that
does not establish a principle, ev
ery futile compromise merely ag
gravates the situation," he con
tinued. "The prognssives pro
pose to go to the very heart of the
problem and to deal with it on
a scientific and constructive ba
sis. They are ntV Interested in
patching up bad laws or In en
acting new measures designed on
ly to fool the people.
" He 1 ore I he progressives can
proceed wit h their constructive
program, however, it is neces-ary
to wipe off the statute books a
law that is destructive to both
busin. -m and agrlculi ure. unjust
to railroad employes, and un
bearably burdensome to the en
ure consuming population,
"The Ksi It-Cummins railroad
law must lie repealed. This post
-war charter of special privilege
must be rewiked. Fp'm this im
mediate Issue there is a compete
d ivergence Pet ween t lie progres

cratic parlle.. Mr. havis stands
lor the retention of this law and
('resident Cool id ge. tu his first
message to co 11 cress, t!i real 1 net!
to veto any amendment of its
principal provisions. He is today
contemlim: against the repeal or
modification of this law, univers
ally condemned by the American
public as a law whoso only friends
ate the railroad owners and those
who serve them. He has also niv
eti his .i net ion to the most ex
travacunt claims of the rail
roads. Senator La Foliette told bis au
dience "that the railroads through
their propagandists are sp;e;;dmc
the statement (hat the election of
the progressives will deMroy the
railroads and injure business."
'That slatement is utterly
false." he tie tared. "The pro-
over the roads and provide for
their operation, it will be done un-I
der conditions that will protect 1
every dollar honestly invested in
railroad property. 1
1 do not believe that the peo-,
pie will be frightened by the bug-
aboo of public ownership that has
been raised by our reactionary op
ponents in an effort to distract ,
1 Irom the immediate issues. j
I "The progressives don't propose
I In their platform, nor do they in-1
i tend to undertake any ill-consider;
! ed experiments in public owner- 1
. ship of railroads or along any oth- ; 11W
er line. When we are ready to
I move forward in this direction, we
shall obtain the services of the
best transportation experts and i
the best leal and financial conn-'
sel available. I'ery detail of the J
plans will be worked out by prac-I
tlcal men, and the matter will be!
1 laid before the country In the j
I lorm of reports, so that any def-1
I icits may be exposed. j
1 "The greatest care will be ex
ercised to insure freedom from 1
the evil of bureauratfc control, j
, The progressives are the keenest;
critics and most outspoken op
ponents of bureaucracy. They ;
lave si pen its' evils and are de-'
termined to eliminate them from
