FIRECRACKER STARTS FIRE
A grass fire Monday i night which
evidently Btarted from a fire cracker
exploded by some boys near the Tom
linson store south of town, burned
over a considerable area of pasture
and stubble land before it was finally,
put out by a large force of men and
boys who rushed to the scene at the
ringing of the town fire bell. The
selling of fire crackers is forbidden
by ordinance within the town of
Myrtle Creek as a precaution against
fire, but the Tomlinson store is out
side the town limits and is free from
municipal restriction, and if the pro
prietor chooses to sell fire crackers
and endanger the property of the
community by so doing, the council
is powerless to prevent such sale.

TOKIO. July 1. Numerous de
tails of the cutting down of the
American flag In the United States
embassy compound today have been
brought to light by police Inquiry,;
although the identity of the Japan-j
ese who slashed the halyards and
thus unceremoniously removed the
ensign, had not been uncovered sev
eral hours after the affair.
The officer's inquiry disclosed
that about 12:45 p. m. a Japanese
stole into the compound, climbed
tho flagpole and rut the flag from'
the ropes with which It was hoisted,
and escaped before the police arrlv-.

The cutter seized an opportunity,
to enter the compound when there,
were no Americans in that part of;
the enclosure. Persons who saw thei
act immediately reported the affair,
to Charge de Affaires Caffey, who
hurriedly oiled on foreign minister,
Shldehara. The police promptly,
placed a guard around the compound :

message received here today an
nounces that King Oeorge greatly
praised the work of 81r Henry Thorn
ton, president of Canadian National
Railways. The premiers of the Cana
dian provinces were received at a
gr-rd,en party at Iiuckingham Palace,
and while questioning the visitors re
garding Canadian affairs his majesty
expressed very particular pleasure at
the success attending the operstlon
of Canadian railways under the direc
tion of Sir Henry Thornton.
"You have taken a good man away
from us In Enelnnd," said the king.
Sir Henry Thornton was born in
Indiana, and was associated with
British railways and with the allies
in the war efforts from the year l'JH
until he was called to Canada to head
the Dominion's national system.

feature length picture with serial

thrills and comedy are so Interwo
ven that absorbing Interest starts
with the first scene and keeps up to
ine very finish. All this makes ror
entertainment of exceptional merit,
and entertainment is what the public
goes to picture houses to see.
Antlers Theatre
Herbert Rawllnson, star In "Dark
Stairways," Universal picture coming
to the Antlers theatre Wednesday,
Bcvered a long connection with the
speaking stage to enter motion pic
tures. He has appeared in some of
the outstanding film successes of the
past few years. "High Speed," "Jack
O' Clubs," "The Dancing Cheat." "Hla
Mystery Girl," are aome of the recent
pictures in which he has been star
red by Universal. Rawllnson was
born and educated in England, and
toured the world over, playing In
many big legitimate productions.
Ruth Dwyer, who has the leading
feminine role in "Dark Stairwaya,"
played opposite the star. Herbert
Rawllnson. in "Jack O' Clubs." and
"His Mystery Girl." She has been in
motion pictures for six or seven years
quitting the speaking stage for work
beforeaihe camera.

SKUNK SLAUGHTERS POULTRY
A largo skunk plnyed havoc with
the poultry out at the J. A. Copeland
place on North Myrtle. Sunday night,
when It dug undor the coop which
contained a largo number of young
chickens just large enough to fry
and slev 40 of them. Most of the
birds were bitten only through the
head aa if the executioner did the
killing more for the exercise It af
forded than through any desire to ob
tain a fill of fresh meat. The animal
came back the following night, but
bud luck flew up and swatted It a
broadside which laid It low. A poi
soned egg had been placed near the
spot where the night bofore prospec
tive fried chicken had ' reposed, and
the pretty, . alriped, odorous kitten
tnsted It. It Is scarcely worth while
to add, that It died. Mr. Copeland Is
quite fond of fried chicken, so he
has put a skunk proof bottom In his
chicken coop and has set out a new
